__ | |--Matthias BENEDUM | |__
[T93469]
NAME/DOB: From Susan Cunningham via July 2006 email.
The following information was sent in by Susan Cunningham via July 2006 email.
Matthias Benedum was born in PA Jan. 28, 1762 George A. Benedum and his wife Magdalena Minnich. Their children were:
1788-01-26 Magdalena
1789-07-07 John
1791-03-11 Elizabeth
1782-09-17 George m. Hannah Meyers of Fairfield Co.
1794-03-12 Jacob
1796-01-28 Matthias m, Anna Dove
1798-01-16 Catherine m. Henry Hartman
1799-02-03 Christina m. Rueben Duff
George was a brother to may ancestor Johannes Andreas Bennethum, Jr. who married Barbara Minnich and remained in Berks Co,, PA. (He changed the spelling of the surname.) They were the sons of Johannes A. Benedum of Bern Twp., Berks Co, PA.
George was ordained a minister in the new United Brethren In Christ Church in 1803 and he moved to Fairfield Co., OH in 1807. He died March 29, 1837 and is buried with his wife in Fairfield Co, in what I know only as the United Brethren graveyard. .
In 1838 or shortly there after his nephew John A. Bennethum, III moved to Fairfield Co. He had married Nancy Anne Benedum, daughter of Peter Benedum and Nancy Anne Kurtz. (It is not known how Peter and John, Jr. were related but Peter and Nancy Anne had been the witnesses at John Jr.'s marriage.) All their twelve children had been born in Berks Co., the youngest in September 1838.
John (1786-1860) and Nancy Ann (1789-1852) are my ancestors. I believe he changed his surname back to Benedum. I don't know if any of their children remained in Ohio. (John IV came back to PA and used the Bennethum surname.) Also clouding the Ohio picture is the fact that Nancy Anne;s brother John Benedum migrated from Loudoun, VA to Carroll Co., OH.

NOTE: There are currently 5 gedcoms on ancestry.com by various posters that have exactly the same data, obviously copied from one to another. All show that Henry Kramer married Sarah Bumbarger 10 Jan 1857 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. Sarah was b 29 Jul 1837 in Fairfield Co., Ohio and died 03 Apr 1872 in Logansport, IN. No parents shown for Sarah. Children showed for marriage but just approximate dates and no locations. No sources listed. There is one, however, that shows this same Henry married Sarah Heller, and that is also my assumption. I can't find any Bumbarger or Kramer/Cramer in 1857 marriages that would appear to be this couple. The only thing I could think of is that perhaps Sarah had divorced and remarried someone by the name of Bumbarger, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Cline cemetery, the cemetery in which both of his known wives were buried, is a tombstone for a Henry Kramer with just the birth year of 1838 on it. The stone matches that of his second wife, Anna, whose stone shows "1850-1919". Wife Sarah's stone is difficult to read... Sarah, wife of H. Kramer, died ----- 1872? aged ------. It looks like it could be readable if the image was bigger.
"Henry Kramer, dealer in general merchandise, Royal Centre, Ind., is a native of Fairfield County, Ohio, where he was born Aug. 1, 1837. His father, Lewis Kramer, is also a native of Fairfield Co., Ohio and was born February 4, 1817. His parents, Lewis and Margaret Kramer, were both natives of Lancaster County, PA., where the father was born in Dec. 1779 and the mother in December 1776. They were married in Lancaster County, Penn., and from thence moved to Fairfield Co., Ohio, where they afterward resided until their deaths. They were the parents of eight children, viz.: Jacob, George, Sarah, Polly, Adam, Margaret, Christina and Lewis, the father of our subject. He was married in Fairfield County, Ohio, Oct. 5, 1837 to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of George and Hannah (Myers) Benadum. She was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, August 16, 1820. In the fall of 1865, Mr. Lewis Kramer and family moved to Cass County, Ind., settling upon the same farm on which he at present resides in section 33, Boone Township, where he has lived since. He has had born to him fourteen children, viz.: Almina, Aaron, Emma, Hannah M., Eliza, Martha E., Joshua, William, Adeline, Mary, Minerva, Elizabeth, Clement L. V., and Henry, our subject, the eldest member of the family. He was married in Fairfield County, Ohio, Jan. 10, 1857, to Sarah, daughter of Henry and Margaret (Bumbarger) Heller. She was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, July 19, 1837. In 1865, Mr. Henry Kramer, in company with his parents, moved to Cass County, Ind., and settled at Royal Centre, and engaged in grocery business for about two years, after which he rented what is known as the Laselle tract of land in White County where he moved and engaged in farming and stock-raising until 1871, in which year he moved to Logansport, Ind., and engaged in butchering business. His wife died April 3, 1872, and on February 23, 1873, he wedded Anna McLaughlin, and in July of that year he moved to Boone township where he purchased a farm in section 14, upon which he resided until 1883, in which year he moved to Royal Centre, and in the following year began the mercantile business again, which he has since continued. He has had born to him nine children, viz.: William J., Sylvester (deceased), Douglass, Elizabeth R., Minerva (deceased), an infant son (deceased), Clara, Daisy D. and Lewis". "Henry Nothstine, father of our subject [son A. C. Nothstine], spent his whole life in Pickaway County. He married Susan Hall, who was also born in Pickaway County, and was a daughter of Henry Hall, who owned a farm cornering on Pickaway and Fairfield counties. The Hall connection is a large one and Mrs. Nothstine's three brothers--Philip, Henry and David--became well-known citizens ; Martha, a sister, married Daniel Rockey, a pioneer pump maker, of Columbus, Ohio.
The children born to Henry Nothstine and wife were five sons and three daughters. Joseph, who was a soldier in the Civil War, served in the 30th Regiment, Ohio Vol. Inf., under Captain Groce and was killed in the battle of Mission Ridge. He was interred in the same grave with two other brave soldiers who had also met a heroic death on this terrible day, one Sergeant Shannon, of Pickaway County, and the other, a brother of Major Johnson. John, the next son, served also in the Civil War, a large part of his service being the guarding and escorting of prisoners to different points. After the war he went to the West and has never returned to Ohio. Lewis Lafayette resides at Columbus, Ohio. Jacob owns a farm in Madison township, which adjoins the one on which he was born. Eliza married Nathan Whaley and resides on a farm in Fairfield County near Waterloo. Christena married Levi F. Dum and resides on the old homestead. Roxa married Isaac Donnelly, who has been one of the caretakers at Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, for the past 14 years. Annie, who was the wife of Adam Reed, died about 1886. Our subject is the oldest of the family." ["History of Pickaway Co., Ohio, and Representative Citizens", Van Cleaf, 1906, p 632.]
