Richard spent time in the Federal Prison at Leaven worth, Kansas. After his release he and his wife moved to the vicinity of San Francisco. He had worked in the Chicago Post office - long enough to have the important duty of handling registered mail. "Registered mail in those days was the method used by banks and business firms all over the country in transferring funds and valuables, and millions of dollars passed over the country via registered mail. Every man in charge of such mail was required to sign for it at each post office, railway mail train or check point, and was held responsible for it while in his custody until delivery was made to the addressee". This is what the author thinks may have happened to Richard... perhaps he signed for mail and the next addressee did not receive it. The Alspach family, 1738-1967 . Provo, UT. [9447] DOM/POM: Dodd, Jordan, Liahona Research, comp. Ohio Marriages, 1803-1900 [database online]. Provo, UT: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2001. Names listed as Caroline Schultz and Augustus Struckman.

In cemetery book, Augustus is mentioned twice. Once on page 46 as just "1834-1865". The brackets around this entry indicate that the data came from a previous cemetery reading -- not the current/last one done in 1982. Beside Augustus in this bracketed information are several other Struckman's. Two infants, one dying in 1891, the other in 1894. A Caroline, 1833-1917, which I will assume at this time to be his wife, and a Dr. Frank (1861-1923) and William A., (1865-1884). Page 46 is for the NEW Betzer Cemetery. Page 99, where I found the entry for Augustus, is for the OLD Betzer Cemetery across the street.

NOTE: In the 1880 census, Caroline is listed as divorced, yet her husband died decades before. There is an entry for a Caroline Struckman and Samuel Kistler who married in Fairfield Co., Ohio, Nov. 23, 1871. It is possible that Caroline married Samuel Kistler and then divorced him and went back to her prior married name.

DOD: Published in the Dec. 23, 1869 issue is the mention of John Snyder who died at home near Lithopolis on October 20, 1868, in his 54th year. Have not seen original article, but I have to wonder if the date of death of 1868 is in error since it's shown as 1868, and it was published almost two months later but in 1869.
