NOTE: According to his sister Maude L. Alspaugh's obituary, he was a doctor who practiced medicine in New Philadelphia, OH. He was graduated from Starling Medical School in 1906. A gift from his and his sisters' estates set up a medical scholarship at Ohio State University. From Judith (Evers) Flinn via internet, April 2001.

Married a woman named Martha who died in New Philadelphia, Ohio. No children. Buried in New Philadelphia. "The Weiser Family", John Conrad Weiser Family Association, 1960, p 657.

"The death of Dr. Paul J. Alspaugh, practicing physician and Fairfield County native, occurred at his home in New Philadelphia from a heart attack. Survivors included two sisters, Miss Gertrude and Miss Maude Alspaugh who made their home with their brother". Published in article "Twenty Years Ago", [Lancaster Eagle Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, March 10, 1962]

DOD/POD: Name listed as Paul J. Alspaugh, March 10, 1942, Cert. #20271. "Ohio Death Certificate Index, 1913-1944", Ohio Historical Society, online ohiohistory.org.

"Paul J. Alspaugh, M.D. In his particular field of practice, tending toward special treatment of brain and nerve diseases, Dr. Paul J. Alspaugh, of New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, has gained will-merited distinction and reputation. His experience in this line has occupied positions which have given him specialized first-hand knowledge of these disorders, and considerable research, investigation and experiments have furthered his equipment for his speciality.

Doctor Alspaugh was born on a farm in Fairfield County, Ohio, December 23, 1878, and is a son of H. Edward and Sarah S. (Courtright) Alspaugh, who were born and reared in the same community and belonged to old and highly respected families of Fairfield County. The father was a son of Paul and Lavina (Weiser) Alspaugh, and they, too, were born and reared in Fairfield County. In the early days three Alspaugh brothers came from Somerset Co., PA., and in 1805 settled in Fairfield County, one of these being the great-grandfather of Doctor Alspaugh. They were of German lineage as were the Weiser family. Sarah S. (Courtright) Alspaugh was a daughter of John Courtright, commonly known as 'Elder' John Courtright, as he was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and a prominent churchman. He was born in Fairfield County, and his father, Jesse Coutright, was a pioneer settler of that county, where he bought much land from the Indians. It has been handed down as a family tradition that the largest sum ever paid an Indian was a quarter of a dollar. Jesse Courtright built a brick house and barn at a very early date in the history of the county, and both became pioneer landmarks, the house still standing. The barn attracted more attention than the house, as it was a very rare thing to build a barn of brick, and it was known far and nears as 'the brick barn' in Fairfield County. The Courtrights are descendants of a Pilgrim progenitor in America, who came over amoung the colonists on the Mayflower.

"Paul J. Alspaugh, the only son of his parents, but with two sisters, was reared on the home farm and received his early education in the rural schools, following where he pursued a course at the Lithopolis High School, from which he was duly graduated. He commenced his career as a teacher in the country schools, where he taught for two years, and then was a student for one year at Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware. Entering then Starling Medical College at Columbus, he completed the prescribed course and graduated therefrom in 1906. In that same year he became an assistant physician on the medical staff of the State Insance Hospital at Massillon, and remained there for thirteen years, being first assistant for the last six years of the period. In 1919 Dr. Alspaugh resigned his position at that institution and located at New Philadelphia, where he has since been in the general practice of his profession, tending toward special treatment of brain and nerve diseases. He is a member of the Tuscarawas County Medical Society, the Ohio State Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association. He is a Royal Arch Mason, and in politics maintains an independent attitude.

"In June 1919, Dr. Alspaugh was united in marriage with Miss Martha McCoy who was born and reared in Harrison County, Ohio, and for several years was an attending nurse at the State Hospital at Massillon. Galbreath, C. B.. History of Ohio. Chicago: American Historical Society, 1925, pp 413-414.

[20504] SLIFE ,Sarah Jane
Birth: Nov. 14, 1850
Death: Feb. 27, 1925
Sarah was born to John Brown and Mary Elizabeth Minehart Fenstermaker Brown in a log cabin on her father's homestead in Boulder Township, Linn County, Iowa. Their cabin was the second erected in this township and according to the best available authority, she was the first white child born in Boulder Township.
Here she grew to womanhood, receiving her education in the near-by school. At the age of 14, she united with the Boulder Reform Church. She remained a faithful member of this church until she united with the Congregational Church of Central City in 1892. To her church and faith she remained faithful until the end.
On June 20, 1870, she was united in marriage to Thomas Hill of Boulder Township. There were born to this union four children, one, Vincent died in infancy. They settled at Hill's Mill with his brother. Mr. Hill preceded her in death February 19, 1887.
On June 20, 1897, she was united in marriage to James Slife, at which time they moved to Central City where she made her home until her death. Mr. Slife preceded her in death May 10, 1917.
Mrs. Slife had been in failing health for a number of years, but was more or less actively engaged in her household duties and other pursuits of life until about eleven weeks prior to her death when she became confined to her bed from sickness and never recovered. She passed peacefully, Friday, noon, on February 27, 1925. [Source unknown - posted on the Linn Co., Iowa, GenWeb site]

Surnames: PAYNE, HAYES, FOOR, PAYE
Sumner Lafayette PAYNE, born 4 September 1882 in Caldwell Co., NC, son of Henry Wilson PAYNE and Sarah Emma HAYES. Family moved to Collin Co., TX in 1889. Was on the 1900 censuses of Collin Co., TX, the 1920 census of Colfax Co., NM, and on the 1930 census of Grady Co., OK. On 21 October 1922 he married Bertha FOOR in Caddo Co., OK. Lised in the transcripts for Rosehill Cemetery are the following:
PAYNE, S. L., ? - Apr/May 1936 (burial 1 May)
(Block 15, Lot 9) (The transcript lists PAYE for him, but that is not correct; she is listed as PAYNE.)
PAYNE, Bertha, 16 Jan 1884 - 4 Dec 1929 (burial 5 Dec)
(Block 15, Lot 9, S 1/2)
They had no children.
Would like to see if there is an obituary for either Bertha or Sumner PAYNE.

"Jonathan Glick was born in Lehigh county, Pennsylvania, but was just a boy when he acompanied his mother to his Fairfield county home, the family settling in Bloom township in the midst of wilderness near what is known as the Glick church, a house of worship belonging to the Lutheran denomination. Jonathan Glick became a member of that church with which he was identified the remainer of his days, taking an active and helpful part in its work. He was anxious to enter the army to serve in the war of 1812, but owing to his youth he was not allowed to go. However, he went to Pennsylvania and worked his way into the army as a substitute for his brother, Philip. After the ware he remained in Pennsylvania until his marriage and then again came to Bloom township, in 1818, purchasing the farm upon which our subject now resides. He brought his land under a high state of cultivation, tranforming it into a valuable farm. For his service in the war of 1812 he received a land warrant by which he acquired 160 acres of land. He was a modest, unassuming man but was respected for his stability of character, his enterprise, and his reliability. He died in October 1866, at the age of 73 years. In early manhood he married Catherine Kerschner, who was a daughter of Jeremiah Kerschner, a resident of Lehigh county, Pennsylvania, who removed to thew est and took up his abode in Bloom township, Fairfield county...".
