1940 - Pedestrian Hit by Locomotive Near Her Home, Margaret Duvall, 38, Killed Instantly; Decapitated Body Found in Rails. Rites to be Saturday. Failure to See Approach of Engine Blamed; Clear View Provided. Miss Margaret Duvall, 38, member of a widely known Harrison Township family, was killed instantly Wednesday at 4:05 p.m. when she walked into the path of and eastbound Chesapeake & Ohio train at the Duvall crossing, less than one quarter of a mile from her home. Miss Duvall, who made her home with her father, James R. Duvall, apparently failed to see the locomotive that was pulling a long string of empty coal cars, although witnesses and railroad men said the train's whistle and bell were sounded and crossing flashers were in operation. There is no building to obstruct the view for more than a mile in either direction from the crossing. Miss Duvall was seen walking in the highway with her head huddled in her coat, a high wind blowing at the time of the mishap. Whether her coat prevented her from hearing the oncoming traill will never be known, Coroner C. E. Bowers, who investigated, said. Miss Duvall's body, decapitated and crushed, was found 50 yards from the crossing. The train was stopped until the coroner and Sheriff Charles Radcliff and Deputy Robert Adkins arrived to permit railroad men to continue their journey. The train, which had left Columbus bound for Russell, Ky., was in charge of Engineer T. Tuttle and Conductor A. E. Burris, both of Raceland, KY. Miss Duvall had spent the afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Brooks Campbell on the west side of the tracks. Mr. Campbell is a section foreman for the Norfolk and Western Railroad. Her father said she had left the Duvall home a little after 12:30 o'clock. Surviving are her father; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Barch of Harrison township and Mrs. Gilbert Smith of Columbus, and three brothers, Benjamin of Harrison townsip, Earl of Columbus, and Noel of Roanoke, VA. Her mother, Mrs. Rebecca Musselman Duvall, died two years ago. The funeral will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Lockbourne Lutheran Church, the Rev. H. D. Fudge officiating. Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery, Lockbourne, by E. F. Schlegel, Ashville. [Circleville Herald, Circleville, Ohio, May 2, 1940, p 1]
