ULYSSES S. BRANDT.
Ulysses S. Brandt was born on a farm in Fairfield county, Ohio, August 3, 1869, a son of Jesse H. and Amanda (Weist) Brandt, natives of Ohio. His ancesters on both sides were among those European immigrants who about 1750, sought freedom in Ameria. Both his paternal and materna grandfathers were soldiers in the war of the Revolution. HIS father served throughout the Civil war in the Forty-sixth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, retiring with the rank of captain in 1865, U.S.
Brandt was educated in the rural schools, the Lithopolis high school, and the academy at Pleasantville, Ohio; taught in the district school four years; completed the classical course at the Ohio State University in 1895; was for four years superitendent of the Canal Winchester publi schools; taught for five years in the East high school of Columbus; studies law at the Ohio State University and the University of Michigan; and h 1901 was admitted to the bar and began the practice of law in Columbus.
From boyhood he has taken an active interest in politics and is recognized as one of the local leaders of the republican party. He was a member of the Franklin county republican executive committee in 1903 and 1904 In 1905 he was elected to the hio senate from the tenth senatorial distor consisting of Franklin and Pickaway counties. No legislature in the history of Ohio enacted greater number of important and progressive laws demanded by the people than did the seventy-seventh general assembly. Wt much of this legislation Senator Brandt was actively identified, particularly the county salary law and the law providing for the regulation and inspection of state banks. He was also the author of a number of local laws enacte in the interests of his district. While a member of the senate he was chat man of the committee on colleges and universities, a member and secreta of the judiciary committee, a member of the committee on common school on benevolent institutions and on geological survey. At the closeof term of three years, embracing two long and busy sessions of the legislature, he declined to become a candidate for reelection, desiring to devote his time exclusively to the work of his profession. In July, 1902, Mr. Brandt was married to Miss Josephine Chaney, of Canal Winchester, who, with their infant child, died April 13, 1904. His fraternal relations at the present time are with Camp Dennison, No. 1, S. V.; Potter Lodge, No. 540, F. & .M., of which he is a past master; Walnut Chapter No. 172, R. A. M., of which he is the present high priest; and Winchester Lodge, No. 125, K. P., of which he is a past chancellor commander. He is also a member of Alpha Tau Omega, a college fraternity. In he practice of law he is now associated with his brother, James H. Brandt, under the firm name of Brandt & Brandt, and is one of the most prominent of the younger members of the bar in Franklin county. [p.820] Ancestry.com. NOTE: Their are many lineages posted at ancestry.com with this Mason family, but it is ALL alike, apparently copied and copied and copied and spreading like a virus...and no one citing their sources or showing documentation. (Some do show 'documentation' but it only references another posted lineage... no 'valid' sources). The Abraham Mason that all believe to be the son of Robert and Susannah they feel is the one in the 1880 Scott Twp., Marion Co., Ohio census. However, he's listed as being 28 years old, born in OH, father b in England, ma b in OH. The fact that England was listed as a birthplace of his father didn't worry me, as census info is often incorrect. HOWEVER, there are several other Mason families listed on that same exact page. There's a family of Thomas Mason who was 26 born in Ohio whose father is born in England. And lo and behold, there's a Joseph Mason who's 63 born in England, parents born in England. I would assume without looking at prior censuses that the Abraham Mason (and Thomas Mason) listed in Scott Twp. were the children of Joseph Mason. The death certificate info, below, MAY be for the Abraham Mason in Scott Twp. in 1880:
Death certificate 46240 image. Abraham Mason, 224 West Line, Findlay, Hancock Co., Ohio, died Aug. 4, 1925, married to Sarah Mason, farmer, aged 81y 7m 10d, born Jan. 24, 1845 Fairfield Co., Ohio to John Mason b Fairfield Co., Ohio and Sarah Mason b OH. Informant was Fred Mason. Buried Aug. 6 in Maple Grove Cem.

"The Tallman House", Shelbyville, IL, was built in 1905 by Horace, inventor
of the first mechanical pickup baler. House restored 1989 (now "The Shelby

Other buildings have the actual motel rooms.
"H. M. Tallman Dies in Shelby. Was President of Ann Arbor Machinery Company. Shelbyville, Apr. 8 -- Horace M. Tallman, president of the Ann Arbor Machine company here and for nearly forty years prominently identified with the hay press business of central Illinois, died at his home on West Main street at 12:15 Sunday noon. While he had suffered other illnesses, his last sickness was of less than a week's duration. On Easter Sunday he attended the sunrise meeting on Old Williamsburg hill in southern Shelby county, apparently in good health condition. Tuesday he complained of feeling ill and despite medical attention and trained nurse service, grew worse until the end came. Death was due to intestinal trouble, with heart complications." [Decatur Daily Review, Decatur, IL, April 8, 1929, p 1.]

NAME: "The father [John Whitehurst] came to Fairfield county in the fall of 1829 and first located in Bloom township, near Greencastle. In the spring of 1845, however, he removed to the farm upon which Jacob Whitehurst is now living. The father was a carpenter by trade and at one time conducted a furniture shop in this county, but subsequently gave his entire attention to agricultural pursuits. He was a man of high moral character and strict principles, was industrious and energetic, and his life work was such as to commend him to the esteem of all. He served as school director and also as supervisor. By his marriage to Margaret Showalter, John Whitehurst became the father of eleven children. Those still living are: Joseph, born in 1823; Norton, born in 1825; Jacob in 1836; Elizabeth in 1837; and William in 1846. Those who have passed away are: Hannah, born in 1827; Sophia, born in 1832; Susana, in 1835; Mary Ann, in 1840; one who died in infancy; and John, born in 1843. The father died March 17, 1856, at the age of fifty-five years, and his wife passed away September 5, 1879, in her seventy-eighth year.
