"SAMUEL DENNIS, farmer and stock raiser, P. O. Oak Ridge, was born in Washington County, Penn., August 15, 1819, son of John and Susannah (Gumbard) Dennis, the former a native of Maryland, the latter of Westmoreland County, Penn., both of German descent. John Dennis, who was a Partner in later life, met with misfortune through filling a pike contract, by which he sustained a great loss. He served in the war of 1812. He went to Knox County, Ohio, in 1824. Of his family of eleven children, Samuel is the tenth child. The subject of this sketch was reared on the farm and received his education in the common schools; when he was about fourteen years of age his father died and Samuel then went on the canal where he continued for eight years. In 1844 our subject was united in marriage with Matilda Alspach, of German descent, and to them were born George, Alonzo, John, William, Marietta, Lucinda, Elizabeth, Charles and Samuel T. Mrs. Dennis, formerly a member of the German Reformed Church, is now a member of the Church of God. Mr. Dennis came to this county in 1856 and settled in Eagle Township. He afterward removed to near Benton Ridge, Ohio, on a tract of 240 acres of land where he now resides. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. In politics he is a Democrat; is now holding the office of school director.", "HISTORY OF HANCOCK COUNTY, OHIO", Warner, Beers & CO., 1886, p 686.

LOCATION: 1890 Veteran's Schedule, East Providence, Bedford Co., PA. Name listed as Samuel S. Foor, Private Co. F, 8th PA Inf, from 23 Apr 1861 to 24 May 1864, served 3y 1m 1d. Most entries show their post office address and if any disability was incurred. The entries at top numbered 13-26 should reflect the same at the bottom, also numbered 13-26 -- the bottom is where they list the post office and disabilities. However, at the top the entries filled our are 13-25, and at the bottom, 13-24. I can't tell where the person missed one of the bottom entries. Since Samuel is listed last at the top, the last one at the bottom would reflect that he had a Ray's Cove address, and a disease of the back and breast. 1890 Veterans Schedules [database online]. 1926 - The divorce case of Essie Phelps against William Phelps was dismissed
this morning in Common Pleas court. The defendant was ordered to pay the $35
attorney fee. [Lancaster Daily Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, Feb. 20, 1926]

1927 - Wilson Phelps, arrested last night by Officers Hammitt and Neely, pleaded guilty to drunkeness when he appeared before Mayor Alspach this morning and was fined $25 and costs. Being unable to pay, Phelps was committed to the county jail. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, August 16, 1927]

1927 - Wilson Phelps May Be Charged With Shooting To Wound. Wilson Phelps, 52, who escaped Sheriff McNaghten's dry squad Thursday night after a gun battle with Deputy Peters, was captured last night at Ranse Fetherolf's farm residence on the Baltimore Pike. The officers swooped down on Phelps so suddenly he had no time for resistance. No gun was found when he was searched. Charges of illegal possession of intoxicating liquor and shooting with intent to wound will probably be filed against Phelps. He and Peters ngaged in a running pistol duel Thursday night when the dry squad discovered liquor in the Sifford flats on Forest Rose Ave., where Phelps stayed and the latter ran from the place, with the deputy pursuing. The chase took them north along the old tow path near Miller Park and Phelps vanished in the darkness after an exchange of shtos, none of which was effective. Ice Cottrill, Phelps housekeeper and alleged accomplice, was arrested when he escaped and is being held at the county jail. Charge of illegal possession may be filed against her also. Her three young children are being takecn care of at the Maywood Mission detention home. "Family Affair". When Phelps was brot to county jail last night he was greeted by his son Wayne, who is serving time for furnishing liquor to boys and Wayne's father-in-law, Geo. Littreel, who was arrested Thursday night for illegal possession. [Lancaster Eagle Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, Oct. 8, 1927]

1927 - Wilson Phelps was fined $200 and costs when he pleaded guilty this morning in probate court to illegal possession of intoxicating liquor. Unable to pay, Judge Snider committed him to the county jail. It is probable that charge of shooting with intent to wound will not be filed against Phelps even though he engaged in a pistol duel with Deputy Sheriff Peters whil escaping from the officers who raided his place of residence. They captured him the next night at a farm house near Lancaster. Icie Cottrill, Phelps houskeeper and alleged accomplice was so arraigned in probate court this morning on the same charge. Judge Snider gave her the choice of a term in Marysville Reformatory or immediate return with her brother and sister to West Virginia, their former home. She chose th elater and was released. [Lancaster Eagle Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, Oct. 10, 1927]

Death certificate image. Willis Phelps of 152 1/2 W. Main, Lancaster, Fairfield Co., Ohio, died there Sept. 11, 1942, aged 70y 1m 10d, divorced from Essa Phelps. Born Oct. 1, 1871 in Circleville, Ohio, to John Phelps b OH and Mary Camp b OH. Informant was Mrs. Kathryn Reed of Lancaster, Ohio. Found dead in bed. Buried Forest Rose Sept. 14.

Death certificate of son Adam shows that his mother's maiden namd was Susanna Snyder and that she was born in Fairfield Co., Ohio.Parentage Unconfirmed. Perhaps this is a widowed dau. in law.

"Susannah Schneider, my g-g grandmother, is listed in the "Descendents of Adam & Anna Mary Schneider, a booklet on file at The Wagnalls Memorial Library. Susannah Schneider's sister, Elizabeth, married Christian Wagenhals. Their son, Adam, attended Wittenberg University, becoming a Lutheran minister as did my great grandfather, his younger first cousin, Reverend Professor Adam Pflueger, at Capital University.
Adam Wagenhals became friends with a classmate, Isaac Funk, who also became a Lutheran minister. Isaac Funk moved to New York City and started a small publishing house. Isaac found he needed help and contacted Adam Wagenhals to join. Adam found the name Wagenhals constantly required spelling and confirmation, so he shortened it to Wagnalls. And the rest you can look up in your Funk & Wagnalls." Don Wurm, descendant, via Nov. 2007 email.
