"About the same time James M. Blackwood, known to everyone as Jim, married a daughter of William Whaley, another farmer, and established himself in the grocery business. Jim had lost an arm in a threashing machine accident but would wrap up a package of sugar as neatly and as quickly as the best. The use of paper sacks was then unknown. He also soon built himself a house locating it on the same lot with his grocery. It was the first house in the village built with a mansard roof instead of a second story". THE VILLAGE, MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS, John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 56.

"It was one day in the spring of the following year, as I was returning from dinner at my home in the chicken-house, that I was called to as I passed the Billingley store recently purchased by James Billingsley from the Cromley Brothers, who had removed to their former homes in Circleville. It was Jim Blackwood calling to me, and as work was not hurrying, I passed over to his grocery. He was seated on a bench in front of his place, and I sat down beside him. 'Bart', he said, 'I want to sell you my grocery. 'Jim', I rlaughlingly replied, 'you are joshing me, as you know as well as I that I have no money with which to buy your grocery'". Jim said he didn't want any money; that if he could sell his business he and John Green were going to Columbus to enter the hardware business there. If agreed, he would invoice his stock to John and give him four years to pay at 1/4 per year. John agreed, though recalls in his book that he should have bargained more for the price. "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 61.

"To Samuel and Nancy Kramer there came first the addition of a daughter, who was welcomed and greeted as a harbinger of future happiness. She was named Sarah Eleanora; was pretty, intelligent, and precocious, quick to learn and devoted, even as a child, to her parents and later, to her brothers and sisters. Four years later came another little girl who was named Harriet Loraine, partly in honor of her Aunt Harriet Bumbarger. To her friends she was Hattie. Then after the passage of another two years, a third daughter came to brighten the Kramer home, and she surely did brighten it with love and cheerfulness. She was given the name of Elizabeth Irene, partly in honor of her Aunt Elizabeth (Bumbarger) Edwards." "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 22.
