Laura May, eldest dau. of Bateman and Catharine Whaley, was born near Lithopolis, Ohio, on the 21st day of May, A. D. 1878. On the 8th day of September, the same year she was received into the church of the redeemer, by baptism, administered at the hands of Rev. Joseph Beck on the 30th day of April 1893, she was received into full communion with St. John's Evangelical Lutheran congregation of Lithopolis, Ohio, by her present pastor, of which she remained a faithful and consistent member until she was called hence. In Laura's death the family was sustained an irreparable loss -- a dutiful and affectionate daughter, the sunday school, an attentive and devoted pupil and the whole community a youthful example of a quiet and unassuming life, well worthy of imitation. In regard to her school life we take great pleasure in reffering to what her teacher on behalf of her school mates, attests, when he says "Laura saw the advantages of an education which opens up new fields of beauty and usefullness. She fully appreciated the fact that, to reach the goal and win the race of life, patient industry and decision of character was absolutely necessary; so in the early autmn you could see her wending her way from her country home to the village school, where she strove to do the teachers will and just as the village school board was to crown her efforts, the death angel called and she has gone to attend a higher commencement in heaven. Yes, Laura's seat is vacant, but we shall ever remember her noble example of obedience, her kind and lovable disposition; but above all, her true, loyal and daily example of christian character". Laura's general health in these last years was reasonably good. Since the beginning of the year, with the exception of the past 3 weeks, she was a member of our family. With her pleasant smiles and sociable qualities she endeared herself to every member of --- During the last three weeks of her stay with us, we noticed a perceptible change in Laura. She was a quiet, dilligent worker. Her thoughts were not all centered on her school work; she also set her affections and meditions on things above. About 5 or 6 weeks ago, she contracted a severe cold, which with other complications finally terminated her life. During this time she was a quiet, patient sufferer, bearing the severe pains with christian fortitude. In her last hours she gave cheering evidence of devoted Christian faith. On Saturday morning at half past four o'clock, it pleased him who doeth all things well to relieve her of all her earthly sufferings, after having attained the ages of 17 years, 9 months and __ days. She leaves bereaved parents, grandmother, two sisters and a large circle of friends to mourn her premature death. Funeral services over the remains were conducted in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church by the pastor assisted by Rev. T. H. E. Eich of Canal Winchester. The pastor
