Died 18 Oct 1834, OR, the book has in brackets June 13, 1831 at 75y 10m 23d meaning someone reading the stone at a prior time read it as thus. However, if you add the 75y 10m 23d to his date of birth, it comes out exactly to 18 Oct 1834, which is the date I will use. Also, his estate record shows his will was written in 1832, filed in '34.
ESTATE of Frederick Huntwork, Liberty Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, case #908 mentions he had been a Revolutionary soldier and applied for a pension before his death. Will written June 17, 1832 and filed in 1834. Executors by will were Thomas Holmes and Gideon Martin. Wife was Catharine. OBIT: Kermit Charles Sitterley died on Saturday, May 1, 2004. Sitterly was born on a farm in Bloom Township, Fairfield County, on May 14, 1910, the son of Will E. and Alice Sitterley.
He attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse known as "The Big 5" for eight years by walking 1 1/2 miles each way. He then attended high school in Canal Winchester for three years until he enrolled at Ohio State University at the age of 16. After three years in the College of Business Administration, he entered the College of Law at the age of 19, and passed the Bar Exam in 1933. He started his law practice with Judge Brooks Shell, who died shortly thereafter, leaving Kermit to practice law alone at the age of 24. With an understanding and love for the law, he practiced in Lancaster, Ohio for more than 65 years.
Kermit married his high school sweetheart, Helen D. Hummell, in 1934 and moved to Lancaster. They had three children, Brooks (Nancy Lee) Sitterley, M.D., who is a retired radiologist living in Ann Arbor, Mich., Nancy (Peter) Vandervoort, who teaches anatomy and physiology at Hocking College, and Attorney William J. (Sarah) Sitterley, who is a partner in the family law firm of Sitterley and Vandervoort. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
During World War II, Kermit was commissioned as an officer in the Navy and moved his family to Washington, D.C., for two years. During that time he kept his law office in Lancaster and communicated by mail and phone as needed.
He served as a trustee of the Wagnalls Memorial Foundation in Lithopolis, for 23 years (1963-1986); trustee of the Methodist Children's Home in Worthington, for 17 years; trustee of the Ohio University Foundation in Athens; member of Central Ohio Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Columbus, where he received the Silver Beaver Award in 1961 for distinguished service; and he was a past president of Lancaster-Fairfield County United Way.
Kermit was on the local committee that brought about the local campus of Ohio University and served on the OU-L Coordinating Council from 1971-1978. He was named an honorary alumnus of Ohio University in 1971.
Kermit is a member of First United Methodist Church of Lancaster, Ohio.
With the help of his wife, Helen, Kermit served as the sole trustee of the Charles Kilbarger Trust and selected 648 students between 1970 and 1989 to receive college scholarships. That trust was turned over to the Ohio University and continues to provide scholarships to Fairfield County students who wish to attend Ohio University.
Kermit was a lifetime member of the Ohio State University President's Club, and the Ohio University Trustees Academy. He was past president of the Fairfield County Bar Association and a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. History of Hancock County, Ohio, Chicago: Warner Beers & Co., 1886.
JAMES M. VAN HORN, farmer, P.O. Vanlue, born January 11, 1829, in Bucks County, Penn., is the son of Charles and Sarah (Twining) Van Horn, natives of Bucks County, Penn. The Van Horns were originally from Holland, the earliest record of them in this country dating back to 1640, when they settled in New York. Abraham Van Horn, the great grandfather of our subject, came to Bucks County, Penn., with a number of his sons, who purchased, in 1720-22, the first land held by the family. His grandsons, Charles and Samuel, afterward came to Ohio. Charles Van Horn, born in Bucks County, Penn., was the youngest of twelve children, none of whom are now living. He married, in 1826, Sarah Twining, and by this union there were ten children. In 1832 he stopped one year in Jefferson County, Ohio, and came to Hancock County, Ohio, in 1833, settled in Amanda Township, bought 110 acres of land, entered another ninety-six acres, began pioneer life, and became one of the leading and successful farmers of his day.
His children were George W., James M., Robert, Mary (wife of H. McUmber), Martha (widow of Mathias Marvin), Harrison (deceased September 28, 1837), Phebe (wife of Dr. J.A. Grove), Sarah (wife of William Carothers), Charles E. and John. James M. Van Horn was married in October, 1848, to Mary M., daughter of David and Elizabeth Morehart. By this union there are ten children: Sarah E. (wife of George Russell), Harriet A. (wife of A.F. Wise), W.S. (a physician in Mount Blanchard, married Agnes A. Allison), James F. (married to Diana Wagoner), Martha J. (wife of S.B. Vansant), Iro, Elma F., Melinda, Lincoln, Ralph W. Our subject has a fine farm, and is one of the leading farmers of Amanda Township. He is a member of the I.O.O.F., and also of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
His brother, John, who was born January 19, 1846, in Amanda Township, this county, married in March 1872, Miss Anna Parker, by whom he has three children: Sarah, Earl and Virgil. He owns a part of the old home farm on which his parents lived for many years. He is of a cheerful disposition, and surrounded by his pleasant family, resides near Blanchard Creek.
