CIVIL WAR: It appears that the father, Charles, and sons Benjamin F. and William H. all served in the Civil War in some capacity. There seems to be a discrepency in some records which follows:

Listed in the "1929 Illinois Roll of Honor" for La Salle Co., IL, [Illinois Statewide Archives] is as follows:

B. F. Dagen, Civil War, Co., K 85 Oh Inf., V 2 p 41Riverwood Cem.
William H. Dagen, Civil War, Co. I 43 OH Inf., V 2 P 41 Riverwood Cem.

The company in which Willam H. Dagen is shown as serving with is actually the one his father, Charles, served in.

"Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War", there are three DAGEN's listed, all shown being buried in Riverview Cemetery in Streator. According to
various websites, Riverview and Riverwood are the same cemetery in Streator

B. F. Dagen, 85th Ohio Inf. died 08 May 1876,
Charles DAGEN, 43rd Inf. OH, died 06 Feb 1873,
William H. DAGEN, 4th Cavalry IN; died 06 Feb 1876,

The National Park Services' website "Civil War Sodliers and Sailors System" shows:
Dagen, Charles, 43rd Reg. Ohio Inf. Co. I (alternate name shown as Charles Dagon)
Dagen, Benjamin F., 85th Ohio Inf. Co. K
Dagen, William H., 10th Indiana Cavalry, Co. L (alternate name William H. Dagan)

Benjamin F. Dagen enlisted June 2, 1862 at the age of 18 into Company K, 85th OVI, and mustered out of same on Sep. 23, 1862 at Camp Chase, Ohio. The 85th was a three-month cregiment and was used to aid in guarding the large number of Confederate prisoners at Camp Chase.

Charles Dagen's enlisted on Jan. 21, 1862 at age 51 into Co. I., 43rd OVI, and mustered out July 13, 1865 at Louisville, KY. According to various sources, Company I was from Fairfield County, Ohio.

William Dagen enlisted in the 10th Ind. Cavalry, Co. L on Jan. 13, 1864, promoted to full sergeant, and mustered out of same company on Aug. 31, 1865 at Vicksburg, MS. The regiment was organized in the fall and winter of 1862-63 at Vincennes and Columbus, In., and left the state May 3, moving to Nashville and to Pulaski, TN. Several battles fought, especially in late 1864 in Alabama and Tennessee.

Feb. 1872, having been married but little over nine months." Source: Original data: Farnam, Charles Henry,. History of the descendants of John Whitman of Weymouth, Massachusetts. New Haven, Conn.: Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor, 1889, p 286.

NOTE: The above text book is difficult to understand, not being written in standard pedigree style with use of numbering system. It APPEARS at first that Channing's name is simply "Channing Wood", but his father is shown on previous page whose last name appears to just be the Honorable "Henry Cummings". However, the last name is WHITMAN. It is not understood or mentioned why Mary Eels went to England to get married, when it appears that Channing Whitman was of Fairfield county, Ohio, as well. Channing Whitman was highly educated. "He was appointed vice-Consul at Huddlesfield, Eng., a position he has ever since retained".

"Still more remote from the Village was the farm of Abraham Harris. He was much of a stockman, especially noted in the care of hogs. Thus he came to be known far and wide. His children left eh neighborhood very early, and so did not have much to do with Village affairs. The exception was Philemon, who returned to the Village after an experience in the gold rush to California. I do not know if he had any success, but on his return he bought a farm near Middletown, or Oregon, just beyond Little Walnut Creek, married, Jane, the daughter of Dr. Needels and settled down to the life of a farmer. William Marshall Long, second child of George and Julian Smith Long, was born January 14, 1849, in Madison township, Franklin county, Ohio. In early infancy, he was baptized by the Rev. Wemley and made an heir of the Kingdom of God. On Easter Sunday, 1865, together with four other young Christians, he vowed allegiance to his Savior at the altar of St. John's Lutheran church in Lithopolis. For fifty-nine years he remained faithful to that confirmation vow. On the Lord's Day, he was ever to be found in the House of God taking a very active part in the worship until last spring when sickness confined him to his home. When the Lord's Supper was administered, he faithfully received the precious Sacrament, missing only four times in those fifty-nine years.

On August 24, 1871, he was united in holy wedlock to Elmira C. Arnold, Rev. Geo. Hatter officiating. To this happy union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters. Two sons and two daughters died in infancy.

He was always a healthy and active man. Besides taking a keen interest in his home and in his church, locally and at large, he served the public in various fields. He was at one time a member of his district school board, later also a member of the Franklin county infirmary board. As a township trustee, he ever advocated the building of good roads. In his last years, he served his town, Canal Winchester as councilman.

His illness dates from March 10, 1923. Since that time, he was obliged to spend the greater part of his days in the house, in bed. On Saturday, June 21, he became unconscious. He remained in this state until noon Tuesday, June 24, when the gracious Lord relieved him from his suffering. Mr. Long reached the age of 75 years, 6 months and 10 days.

There remain to mourn his departure his faithful wife, three children, Geo. F., Abbie Hoover and Lizzie Oyler; two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, four grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Wm. Dowler of Columbus, a number of nephews, nieces and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at the home at two o'clock Thursday afternoon and at 2:30 at his church, the Rev. Lammert Redelfs officiating. His body was laid to rest in the beautiful God's acre in Lithopolis where it will await the second coming of the Redeemer.

1924 - William M. Long, 76 died Monday at his home in Canal Winchester. He was a member of the Canal Winchester council. He is survived by his widow, one son George; two daughters, Mrs. Abbie Hoover, Groveport, and Mrs. Elizabeth Oyler, Hebron, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held today from St. Johns Lutheran church Lithopolis of which he was a member. Burial will be in Lithopolis cemetery. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, June 25, 19244]
