OBIT: Sarah Samantha Courtright, daughter of John and Mary Courtright, was born in Bloom Township, Fairfield Co., Ohio, on the 26th day September 1855, and died at Lithopolis, on the 11th day of January, 1901, aged 45 years 3 mo, and 15 days. She was married to Ed Alspaugh in Lithopolis, O, by Rev.C.W.Courtright, Aug. 29th 1876. This union was blessed with three children, one son and two daughters." The obituary goes on to tell that she joined the Presbyterian Church in Lithopolis at 16 yrs old. After her marriage she removed her membership to the Wesley Chapel, Methodist Church, near Rock Mill. "Her last illness was of a very short duration although she had not been in good health for several years..." "The funeral took place on Monday a.m. Jan. 14th from the Prebyterian Church in Lithopolis."

"Paul J. Alspaugh, M.D. In his particular field of practice, tending toward special treatment of brain and nerve diseases, Dr. Paul J. Alspaugh, of New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, has gained will-merited distinction and reputation. His experience in this line has occupied positions which have given him specialized first-hand knowledge of these disorders, and considerable research, investigation and experiments have furthered his equipment for his speciality.

Doctor Alspaugh was born on a farm in Fairfield County, Ohio, December 23, 1878, and is a son of H. Edward and Sarah S. (Courtright) Alspaugh, who were born and reared in the same community and belonged to old and highly respected families of Fairfield County. The father was a son of Paul and Lavina (Weiser) Alspaugh, and they, too, were born and reared in Fairfield County. In the early days three Alspaugh brothers came from Somerset Co., PA., and in 1805 settled in Fairfield County, one of these being the great-grandfather of Doctor Alspaugh. They were of German lineage as were the Weiser family. Sarah S. (Courtright) Alspaugh was a daughter of John Courtright, commonly known as 'Elder' John Courtright, as he was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and a prominent churchman. He was born in Fairfield County, and his father, Jesse Coutright, was a pioneer settler of that county, where he bought much land from the Indians. It has been handed down as a family tradition that the largest sum ever paid an Indian was a quarter of a dollar. Jesse Courtright built a brick house and barn at a very early date in the history of the county, and both became pioneer landmarks, the house still standing. The barn attracted more attention than the house, as it was a very rare thing to build a barn of brick, and it was known far and nears as 'the brick barn' in Fairfield County. The Courtrights are descendants of a Pilgrim progenitor in America, who came over amoung the colonists on the Mayflower. Galbreath, C. B.. History of Ohio. Chicago: American Historical Society, 1925, pp 413-414.

Brian Foor

GLADWIN -- By Marlene Foor

For most young adults turning 21-years-old means being old enough to drink legally, but for Brian Foor turning 21 is a milestone of surviving another year.

Foor, who turns 21 May 11, was born with a rare muscle disease, myotubular myopathy, and after birth was sent home with his parents to die.

Life expectancy was very short for babies born with this disease, but Foor has surprised many doctors at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Foor's grandmother, Gertrude Lemke, gave birth to three boys, who are now thought to have had the same disease. One boy lived to nine months old, and the other two only survived hours.

Doctors had no idea what was wrong with them until Foor was born, Lemke said.

Foor was born with the rare muscle disease.

At nine months old, he was hospitalized and placed on a ventilator. Being ventilator-dependent, needing a feeding tube and very limited muscle strength didn't stop Foor from graduating from Gladwin High School, being on the honor roll and a member of the National Honor Society.

A nurse accompanied Foor, in an electric wheelchair, to school to monitor his respiratory care and help him with notes and books.

Because of his tracheostomy, he is unable to speak aloud, but loves to use his computer and play with his Playstation II gaming system.

Last fall he took an online computer class through Mid Michigan Community College and received a B+ as a final grade. He plans to continue taking more classes online.

Foor lives with his mother, Marlene Foor, in Gladwin and is a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. He enjoys shopping and going to the movies.

Turning 21 also brings an end to his medical coverage. His mom has been working for a year to find medical services to keep him living at home. Because he requires 24-hour care, nursing care at night, and prescriptions to keep him healthy, it has become a priority to find the best medical coverage for him.

Foor has a great attitude and enjoys life.
