Laura E. Dame
Laura E. Dame, wife of Harry L. Dame, died at her home on Lake street,
Thursday evening December 27, 1895 aged 35 years, 7 months and 5 days. Mrs.
Dame was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Bachar, early pioneers of Ridge
township, and was born at Lithopolis, Fairfield County, May 22nd, 1859. In
early life she became a member of the German Reform church, which was the
church of her parents. Three years ago she transferred her membership to the
English Lutheran church at Vanlue, in which she continued faithful and as
active as the circumstances would permit, her health being very poor for more
than the past year. On the 16th of January 1882 she was united in marriage,
at the home of her parents, with Harry L. Dame, of Carey, to whom were born
two sons, who with their father are left to mourn the loss of a faithful and
devoted wife and loving mother. Her funeral, which at her request, was held
at her home, occurred on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., Rev. F. B. Heibert
officiating. The interment took place at Spring Grove cemetery.

LOCAL COUPLE WILL OBSERVE THEIR 65H WEDDING ANNIVERSARY.
Sixty-four years ago today it was Miss Sally Morehart and Lebbus B. Custer. But 64 years ago Saturday, Nov. 15, they became Mr. and Mrs. Lebbus B. Custer. The anniversary of their wedding will pass quietly as the couple plan to spend the day at their comfortable home at 1100 Michigan avenue. As explained by Mr. Custer, they were married "just one week after the election of Abraham Lincoln for his first term". At the time Mr. Custer was twenty-five years of and and Mrs. Custer was a girl of twenty-one. Today Mr. Custer has reached his eighty-ningth milestone and his wife is eighty-six. Both are hale and hearty. However, Mrs. Custer's eyesight is failing and she is unable to read.
MOVES TO CASS. The Custer and Morehart farms adjoined near Columbus, Ohio. The families visited each other often. When Miss Sarah, always referred to as Sally, was six years of age, her parents purchased a farm north of Logansport and removed to this county. Despite the distance that separated the two families, they visited each other. As the children grew up Sallie and Leb became sweethearts. The love affair culminated in the marriage of the two at the home of the bride, three miles north of Logansport on Novemeber 15, 1860. Mrs. Custer says she was dressed in brown silk, her dress being of the most stylish cut of the time. The sleeves were the great wide arrangement peculiar to that perried. She wore no headdress. Following the ceremony there was no belling. Not that they didn't have bellings in those days, but the newlyweds stole a march on their friends and left immediately after the ceremony for Lafayette, where they spent several days. Mr. Custer about a year later sold out his store at Lithopolis, Ohio, and bought a farm two miles north of the city on the Michigan road. This was their residence for 44 years. In 1904 they left the farm and moved to 1100 Michigan Ave.
PROMINENT IN POLITICS. Mr. Custer during his life has been prominent in politics as a Democrat. He served from 1878-1888 as a member of the state board of agriculture and for two terms represented the county in the lower house at Indianapolis. Since retiring from farming he served as county councilman for a term. Mrs. Custer was the eldest child of her family, but has outlived all her brothers and sisters. One sister was the wife of Burl Booth, who recently celebrated his 91st birthday. She died several years ago. Mr. Booth and the sister married five years before Mr. and Mrs. Custer, and the occasion was observed by the young men of the city who knew Booth, at an immense belling. Mrs. Custer, who at that time was 18 years old, can repeat from memory the words of a song the visitors sang. Mrs. Custer can remember when she was a child in school, in fact, the first school she ever attended, she says. Her first school in Cass county was located on the north bank of Eel river west of the Davis bridge, on top of the hill.
MASON SINCE 1857. Mr. Custer believes he is the oldest Mason in the county, in points of years of membership. He joined the lodge at Lithopolis in 1857, and has since had his name transferred to the books of Orient lodge, this city. About the only time he leaves home at night, he says, is to attend lodge. Dallas Custer, county commission and secretary of the far association, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Custer. The couple has three children. They are Dallas Custer, Mrs. Clara Wickers of Indianapolis, and Clarance C. Custer of Buffalo, NY. [Logansport Pharos Tribune, Logansport, IN., Nov. 13, 1924]

1915 - James Englehart of Lithopolis Accidently Shoots 15 Year Old Brother - Accident occurred on Farm of a Sister in Pickaway County and Lad Was Being Rushed to Hospital in Circleville. Died on Way. A fatal hunting accident occurred Monday morning about ten o'clock on the farm of Mrs. Emor Smyers in Madison Twp., Pickaway county. Mrs. Smyers' two brothers, William and James Englehart, of Lithopolis, were hunting squirrel, when William was accidentally shot by James. The shot entered the boy's left thigh just below the groin. Dr. Gardner, of Ashville, was called and seeing how seriously the boy was wounded telephoned to Dr. A. W. Holman and then started to bring young Englehart to the hospital in Circleville. The boy died just as the party reached the city, death resulting from the shock and loss of blood. The boys are sons of Charles Englehart, of Lithopolis. William is 15 years old and James 18. The boys left their home early Monday morning on a hunting expedition. When they reached their sister's home the elder brother said, "I want to show you how a good shot gun shoots" and pulled the trigger. The gun was discharged and his brother dropped to the ground mortally wounded. Distracted the elder brother ran to the house and called to his sister for help. Dr. Gardner, Elmer Bowman and John Custer took the body back to Ashville were Undertaker Schlagel will prepare it for burial. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, Sept. 28, 1915]

"S. N. Jones, a son of Francis Jones, was born and reared in Columbia county, GA. About 1807 he, in company with six families of friends, emigrated to Miami county, Ohio. At that date that section of the state was vast wilderness, and our new settlers were obliged, among other hardships of pioneer life, to burn and dig out mortars in stumps, with which to grind their corn. The subject of this sketch was born in Miami county, Ohio, Jan. 7, 1821. During 1857 he removed to Indiana, and while in that State was married to Miss Elizabeth Foor, who died soon after. He was again married, this time choosing for a helpmeet Elizabeth Beals, who bore him two children--George W. and Adelia A. In 1857 Mr. Jones came to Bremer county, Iowa, and the following year removed to Franklin county, where he continued to live until 1863. At that date he returned to this county, locating on his present place in Jackson township. He owns 90 acres of good land, valued at $40 per acre." SHERROD William "Bill" E. Sherrod, age 64, of Grove City, passed away Monday, October 9, 2006. Bill was born to the late Charles E. and Elizabeth (Sanders) Sherrod. After attending South High School, Bill enjoyed a long career with Downey Carpet Cleaning and was later employed by the Haughn Rd. IGA where he was the deli and bakery manager. Bill enjoyed participating in his children's activities as an assistant scoutmaster with Troop 275 or as an assistant soccer coach for Grove City Parks & Recreation Dept. It was while dutch oven cooking with the scouts and managing the bakery that Bill sharpened his baking skills, particularly for his homemade bread and delicious pizza bread. Recently, Bill had become an advocate for the disabled after an incident crossing the railroad tracks and was looking forward to testifying at the Ohio Statehouse about safety issues for the handicapped. He never let his disability slow him down, he was always going to town center or working in his woodshop making his woodcrafts. Bill was also a faithful member of Creekside Family Church. In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by his daughter Melinda Perry. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Sharon; children, Cindy (Ken) Dowden of OR, Wendy (Jay) Isbister of NY, William E. (Danielle) and Lauren Sherrod, both of Grove City. He was grandpa and pee-paw to his 7 grandchildren; he is also survived by his brother, Donald Sherrod of Grove City; special friend, Lonnie Clarkson; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the SCHOEDINGER-NORRIS CHAPEL, 3920 Broadway, Grove City, where Bill's funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. Pastor Rob Conrad will officiate. Interment will follow at Lithopolis Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Bill's memory to the American Heart Association. Visit www.schoedinger.com to sign the online guestbook or share a special memory of Bill.
