"JOHN CASTANIEN was born in Perry County, Ohio, June 11, 1825. His parents, Alexander and Marelius (King) Castanien, were natives of Prussia and Switzerland respectively, the former crossing the ocean to escape military service, the latter emigrating at the age of four years. They were married in Perry County, where they passed their entire lives, he a farmer and teacher of German schools. He died in his sixtieth year, his wife about the same age. Their children were John, Serenus, Jacob and David. John Castanien remained at home till his twenty-fifth year, obtaining the rudiments of an education and working upon the farm. In 1848, he came to this county, his father having entered his present farm of 100 acres, then covered with timber, which our subject has since removed. He is now the owner of 440 acres; his " bank" barn is the largest in the town ship, and his dwelling was erected in 1863-64 at a cost of $2,000. Mr. Castanien was married in the autumn of 1848, to Christina Alspach, five children resulting-Mahala, Caroline (wife of Emmet Bachtel), Frank, David and Amos E, Mrs. Castanien's demise occurred in 1861, at the age of thirty-five, and Mr. C. was married, November 25, 1863, to Miss Sophia Alspach (sister of first wife), daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Runkle) Alspach, natives of Pennsylvania, residents of Perry County, Ohio. She was born April 15, 1837. Their children were William H. and Allen B. In politics, Mr. C. is an independent Democrat. He and his family are all members of the German Reformed Church, of which he was many years a Deacon." "HISTORY OF WYANDOT COUNTY, OHIO", Leggett, Conaway & Co., 1884, p 907 - Pitt Township.

OBIT:
Township Woman is Victim of Apparent Suicide - In what state police have termed a case of apparent suicide, a 46-year-old Bedford township woman died of gunshot woulds at her home late Friday afternoon. The victim of the shooting is Miss Marie Foor, a native of Cypher. State Police officer Harry Rook said Friday night that although his investigation of Miss Foor's death was not yet complete, the circumstances surrounding the shooting made it appear that she had taken her own life. The dead woman had acted as a housekeeper for Eugene Stickler, age 52, at his home on Chalybeate Road, between the Kennmetal plant and Belden. Stickler told police he found Miss Foor slumped over in a kneeling position outside his home at about 4:30 p.m. Friday. She had been shot in the neck and a 22-calibre rifle was lying beside her. The weapon belonged in the Stickler household. There were no witnesses in the shooting and no other residences are nearby. Stickler said that Miss Foor was alive when he found her. He immediately left in his car to summon the aid of a Bedford physician but the woman was dead by the time he and the doctor returned to the scene. Officer Rook said that Miss Foor had been in apparent good health and left no notes to indicate her reason for taking her life. Florence Marie Foor was born October 3, 1907 at Cypher (Hopewell Twp). She was the daughter of James P. Foor of Cypher and the late Minnie E. (Bollman) foor. Her mother died in 1950. In addition to her father, she is survived by a brother, Gerald, of Cypher, and two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Whitfield and and Miss Nellie Foor, both of Hopewell. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Conner Funeral Home in Everett and are not yet complete. [Bedford Gazette, Bedford, PA, October 31, 1953]
OBIT: Florence Marie Foor. Funeral services for Florence Marie Foor, 46, of Bedford township, who apparently committed suicide at her home Friday afternoon, will be held Monday morning, Nov. 2, at 10:30 o'clock at the Conner funeral home, Everett, the Rev. Coy Foor officiating. Interment will be in Bethel church cemetery. Miss Foor was born Oct. 3, at Cypher, Hopewell township, the daughter of Jacob [sic] and Minnie E. (Bollman) Foor. Her mother died in 1950. In addition to her father, she is survived by a brother, Gerald, of Cypher, and two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Whitfield and Miss Nellie Foor, both of Hopewell. Membership was held in the Kearny Union church. [Bedford Gazette, Bedford, PA., Nov. 2, 1953]

"The Foor Family", George S. Conover, p 25
"A four-year-old Everett Rt. 2 girl suffered a broken collarbone Friday afternoon when she dashed across the road into the path of an oncoming motorist. Marie Marie Foor, daughter of Mrs. Geraldine Marie Foor, was playing across the highway from her home, located along old Route 26, near Tatesville. When her mother called her, she rushed onto the highway from behind a clump of shrubs. Driver of the auto was Mrs. Minerva J. Eichelberger, also of Everett Rt. 2. According to State Police, she applied her brakes on seeing the child, but was unable to avoid striking her. The right front bumper caught the girl as she was almost across the road. Mrs. Elichelberger took the child and her mother to Bedford County Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for a fracture of the right collarbone, cuts on the right side of her forehead and brushburns of both legs and arms. She was not detained at the hospital. State police termed the accident, which occured at approximately 4:15 p.m., unavoidable and said no charges would be brought." "The next house was occupied and owned by Daniel Shultz immediately after the Civil War. He lived here to a great age, and gained and kept more friends than any other man of my acquaintance. He had a family of three sons and two daughters to grow to maturity. A sweet little girl, I think they called Hattie, passed from them when but two. I can yet see her in memory as she would toddle about the place. Luther, the eldest son, a painter as his father, moved to the western part of the state. Horatio went to Chicago, where he conducted a school for the dance. Olive married George Weiser, for half century identified with the business interests of the Village, Mary changed her name to McLean, and moved with her husband to Magnetic Springs in northwestern Ohio. I do not know what became of George, the third son". "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 26.
