OBIT: J.A.R. Koch died suddenly at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at his home near Mayview his demise being due to heart trouble superinduced by advanced age. Mr. Koch was 73 years old and was one of the oldest and best known residents of the eastern part of Champaign county being a member of a family that was identified with the early history of the county. The decdent had been a widower for the past eight years but is survived by three adopted children. Frank of Mayview; Clarence, living north of that village and Jennie, at home. L. M. Koch of this city is a nephew and Mrs. E. A. Birdzell of Champaign and Mrs. Abraham Hoy of North Race street, this city, are nieces. [Urbana Daily Courier, Urbana, IL., Thurs., Aug. 9, 1917, p 1]

Attribute Death to Heart Desease [sic]. J. A. R. Koch had warning of fatal attack. A coroner's jury following an inquest late yesterday afternoon found that the sudden death of J.A.R. Koch was due to heart disease. The jury was composed of Fred Hoy, Jesse Hoy, Isaac Gordan, ... The evidence was that Mr. Koch had complained of his heart only during the last month. Yesterday afternoon he walked from his home to that of his son, Frank, and was in the lot when he complained of "one of those ___ spells". He sat down for a while and finally was assisted to the house, where he died 30 minutes later before the arrivial of a physician. Mr. Koch was a native of Ohio and at the time of his death was aged 72 years 10 months and 19 days. He had lived 50 years in the vicinity of Mayview. Funeral services will be conducted from the Methodist church at Mayview at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon by Rev. Mr. Honck. Interment will be made in Mount Olive Cemetery. [Urbana Daily Courier, Urbana, IL, Friday, Aug. 10, 1917, p 1]

"On November 3, 1864, Mr. Koch arrived in St. Joseph Township of Champaign County. He had left a sweetheart behind him in the old Buckeye state and on January 19, 1868, he went back to reclaim her. When he left Ohio he was poor but too proud to ask the young lady to marry him until he could provide a home. On returning he told her of the spendid State of Illinois and of its many favorable opportunities, and she was glad to exchange her name from Suzanna Foor to Koch. Returning to Illinois with his young bride Mr. Koch worked as a farmer, and in February, 1881, settled near Mayview where he bought his first land for $25 an acre... Mr. Koch had reared in his home Mary Oyler, daughter of his half brother. One other of his farm hands had lived with him for seven years. Christopher and Elizabeth McCrughen had died in Champaign county leaving seven orphan children, and Mr. Koch was appointed guardian for them. He and his wife subsequently adopted two of the boys, A. F. and J. C., and the daughter E. J. They legally assumed the Koch name in 1893... Nearly 10 years before his own death Mr. Koch was called upon to mourn the passing of his beloved wife on December 3, 1907. She was a woman of many virtues, kindly, sympathetic and charitable, and had been in sympathy with her husband in their love for orphan children. In fact so many fatherless and motherless and friendless found shelter in their home that it was often called "The Orphan House". [22458] "Jeremiah [Runkle] b in 1776, in his youth followed the occupation of teaming over the Virginia mountains, and near the close of the century he went with his two sisters to Ohio. Not liking it there, they soon returned to Virginia, but Jeremiah settled down in Fairfield county, and subsequently, about 1826, removed to Perry County, O., near Thornville, he made his home. He was twice married, first to Cristina, daughter of Lewis Runkle, by whome he had thirteen children; and after her death, in 1826, second, to Christina Sult, by whom he had four children.
