OBIT: Rochester Sentinel, May 24, 1912, Friday. Rochester, IN.
Oliver Alspach, one of the county's pioneer citizens, passed away Thursday afternoon shortly before 5 o'clock, after an illness extending over a priod of many months. Death was due to gangrene and complications due to old age.
Oliver Alspach was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, in Sept 1834, and at an early age came to Fulton county settling on the farm south of the county farm, where he lived practically all his life. He was united in marriage with Miss Minerva Pence in 1854, and it was on the old home place that the couple raised the family born to them, Mrs. Alspach having died 15 years ago. He was remarried several years ago and the wife remains with the children of the first marriage to mourn their loss. The children are Mrs. George Cloud, Mrs. Charles Richardson and Mrs. James Clemans, Macy; Mrs. Scott Whitmer, Kokomo; Charles Alspach and Mrs. Arthur Brubaker, this city, and Jay Alspach, Peru. Eight years ago Mr. Alspach removed from the home place to a farm near Birmingham, but after living there for a year he sold the place and moved to Mt. Zion where he has since resided.
The funeral will be held at the Mt. Zion church Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. S. C. Norris of Culver to have charge of the services. Burial will be made at Mt. Zion.

DOB/DOD/POBurial: From Laura Rees via Sept. 2000 email.
DOD/POD: Fulton County, Indiana. Indiana Works Progress Administration. Index to Death Records A-Z. 1882-1920. Name listed as Oliver H. Alspach, age 77, C-18 p 53.

OBIT: Elizabeth A. Foor
Nov. 11, 1923 - Oct. 22, 2012

Elizabeth Ann Foor, rural Rockville, died on October 22 at her residence.

Born November 11, 1923 in Hammond, she was the daughter of Anton Buron and Julia Konch Buron. On December 29, 1943, she was married to Robert G. Foor, who survives. Their marriage was blessed with eight children: Robert A. of Chicago; Douglas of Midwest City, OK; Gregory and John of Merrillville; Joan of Bloomington; Christopher of-Hammond; Thomas of Indianapolis; and Julia, deceased.

Elizabeth (Betty) was, for the greater part of her life, a devoted wife and mother, who raised her children with love and patience. Although she often denied it with vigor and complete sincerity, she was generally regarded as a gourmet cook by those privileged to sit at her table; and the unexpected guest was always welcome. She possessed a refreshing candor, and her manner was ever free of guile or subterfuge. She was loved by all who knew her.

A life-long member of the Roman Catholic Church, she gracefully performed volunteer
work at the church and in the community.

Other survivors include a son-in-law, five daughters-in-law, fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, six great- great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews,
and one sister.

Visitation at Bames and Rice Funeral Home, Wednesday, October 24, 5pm to 7pm; Rosary at 7pm. Mass on Thursday, October 25, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockville, at 11:00 am.

INDEX

[30263] "John D. Martin was born in Greencastle, Fairfield Co., Ohio, January 7, 1819. When a small boy his parents moved to Baltimore, same county, and he was employed by the contractors of the Ohio Canal to carry water to their workmen on the deep cut near Monticello. Here he attracted the attention of Nathaniel R. Usher, who, as the canal neared completion, opened a store on the new town of Millersport. Leaving Usher's employe he with with George B. Arnold to Utica, Licking co., Ohio, and clerked in his general store. A fellow-clerk was W. S. Rosencrans, a boy about his own age, the future commander of the Army of the Cumberland. John D. Martin came to Lancaster about the year 1836 and entered the store of Levi Anderson as clerk, going from Anderson to John H. Tennant. In 1840 M. B. Browing purchased the stock of Tennant, and conducted the business in the name of M. B. Browning and company, his clerks Martin and Stambaugh being the Company. Browning came from the East and was backed for a time by his uncles, one in Canton, Ohio and two in New York, but he was not a successful business man. In a year or two the new concern failed and Stambaugh and Martin found themsevles involved and liable for Browning's debts. Stambaugh took the benefit of the bankrupt act and was released. Martin declined to do that and sent for Mr. Thayer, one of the creditors, a distinguished merchant of Philadelphia. He came and examined the affairs of the firm and made a settlement, charging Martin with one-fourth of the indebtedness. This was settled by a long note, which Mr. Martin was several years in paying. In the meantime he had commened the study of the law under that eminent lawyer, JohN T. Brasee. Mr. Thayer gave him the books of the old concern to settle up, and so well did he perform the duty that when admitted to the bar, collections came to him from all of the great houses of Philadelphia through the influence of Mr. Thayer. While studying law for two years he kept the books of Gilbert Devol. He was also interested to some extent in a tin store. He was admitted to the bar and practiced his profession for 10 or twelve years. He was a business lawyer of rare ability and a very good advocate, and was employed upon many important cases, with Brasee and Hunter as opposing counsel.

In 1854 S. C. Stambaugh returned from California with some ready money, and he induced Mr. Martin to join him and P. B. Ewing in a banking venture. In that year the exchange bank of Martin and Company was organized. The agreement with Mr. Martin was that he should spend one hour each day in the bank, but Mr. Martin was one who cound not trust important matters to others when he could attend to them himself and he found it necessary to spend his entire tim ein the bank, and gave up his profession. This bank did a profitable business until the year 1864, when it was merged into the First National Bank of Lancaster, with Mr. Martin as president. Mr. Martin was a banker for 32 years, and handled millions of money without the loss of a dollar to any man. The year 1886 he sold his interest in the bank to S. J. Wright and retired permanently from business. In connection with the banking business, mr. Martin was for many years a partner in a dry goods store. He had two or three ventures of this kind. He was also largerly engaged in the milling business, in coal land speculations, and in mining and shipping coal on a large scale. His connection with the busines interests of lancaster covers a period of sixty years, years of toil and anxiety, prosperity and adversity. He was for many years a member of the school board and always took a lively interest in our schools. He was a Republican politician, one of the leaders in this county. He is a good speaker, and his voice was heard in the dark days of the rebellion in support of the government and our army in the field. His career is an inspiring one from a penniless boy to honorable old age. Mr. Martin was an able adviser and his advice was sought by many business men. Senator Ewing had a high opinion of his ability, and frequently sought his advice, a compliment that was appreciated. In the quiet of his home with his family and books, he spends the declining years of his life, taking a summer trip to Middle Bass, Lake Erie, where he finds congenial spirits". [9391] NAME/DOB/Parentage - from 1850 census. See notes on supposed father.

Although I have no confirmation, I believe that this Mary Ann Smith shown in the 1850 census with supposed father John Smith, Sr., is the one that married James BAILEY and died in April 1870. The only assumption I have that they are one in the same is that in the 1870 census, a child named Emma Bailey is living alone with John Smith Sr. and wife, leading me to believe at one year's old this was a grandchild of John Smith. In the 1870 census for James Bailey, there is no Emma living with them, though in 1880 there is one who's 11 years old.

My instinct tells me that little one-year-old Emma Bailey went to live with her grandparents after the death of her mother as widow James Bailey had enough to handle with their other children. When she was older, she returned to her father.

NAME: See notes on husband, James BAILEY.

Apr. 28, 1870 aged 37y. 37y is more likely. At 27, she would've been about
11 when she was married.
