NOTE: I think the name "Wellington" may be in error. The name preceding him
on the census was also Wellington, and perhaps the census taker wrote it
there in error and then never completed it fully when going to the next home.
It also appears that someone may have tried to erase it, as it's much lighter
than other writing, though fully recognizable. Rena's last name looks like Lyln. Lyon? Lybn? Lybu? Lyin?

 __

|

INDEX

[23855] "Isaac Brandt was born near Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH., on April 7, 1827. He was reared on a farm, and his early life was passed in much the usual manner of farmer lads.... On attaining his majority he gave his father all the money he possessed, rented a shop, and at daylight on the morning of his twenty-first birthday, might have been seen in a little room ready to begin life for himself as a shoemaker, without a cent in his pocket. The first day, Friday, he earned 75 cents, and on Saturday, one dollar; the next week he cleared 10 dollars and felt that he was on the direct road to success... he was united in marriage with Miss Harriet Wisely... In the month of May, 1850, Mr. Brandt removed with his young bride to Auburn, DeKalb County, Indiana, where he carried on the boot and shoe business. In October 1854 he was elected sheriff of DeKalb county, and served two years... in 1856 came to Iowa in company with Judge Morris of Fourt Wayne... In the fall of 1873 he was elected to the Fifteenth General Assembly of Iowa, "Ancestry.com. Chicago, Illinois and Iowa Biographical Dictionary [database online]. Chicago and New York: American Biographical Publishing, 1893, p 442. This bio also shows Isaac was the son of David Brandt b 22 Dec 1776 and Martha Hamilton; Isaac being their youngest child.

"David Brandt, Sr., was the father of 7 sons and 5 daughters. David Brandt, Sr., died October 27, 1851, aged 78 years. DOM/POM: From the website of Kevin Tewell at FreePages, RootsWeb, 2003

SPOUSE UNCONFIRMED! Vic Ritchey posted this info to Ancestry World Trees (ancestry.com) in Jan. 2003. He showed that Hubert R. Tewell, born 30 Oct 1923, was the s/o Melvin H. and Nora V. (SWARTZWELDER) TEWELL and that he married Iva Jane FOOR b 14 Jul 1926. There was absolutely no other info -- no dates of death, no locations of birth/death/marriage. However, I found Hubert Tewell's death date in the SSDI (1969), and he was issued a card in PA. No last known residence shown. This particular "Iva Foor" is the only Iva I can find who was born about 1926 as Vic Ritchey shows. No Iva Tewell is listed in the SSDI, but she may not be deceased and/or she may have remarried since 1969 when Hubert died.

[8682] Mary Stump Hoy's obituary printed in the Shelbyville Democrat on March 10
1892 reads:

Mrs. Mary Hoy, wife of David A. Hoy, died at her residence in Pickaway
Township, Shelby Co, IL, Feb 22, of la grippe, aged 75 years, 6 months and
20 days. She was born in Fairfield Co., OH, 1816. she was twice married,
her first marriage was to Peter hoy, who was accidentally injured while
going home from a class meeting, Aug 12, 1837, from which he died the next
morning. From this marriage one son was born, Rev. Simon P. Hoy. Her
second marriage was to David A. Hoy, who survives her at the age of 84
years. Her first and second husbands were brothers. To the second marriage
seven sons and three daughters were born, all living. There are 33
grandchildren and 6 great granchildren. In 1840, she with her husband,
moved from Pickaway Co, Ohio to Putnam County, Ohio, where they lived for
three years in a wilderness, in a cabin, six miles from a wagon road. In
1843, they returned to Pickaway County, OH, and in 1854, on the 6th day of
October the family reached Shelbyville, Il., and have resided there ever
since, in the locality where she died. At the age of 18 years, Mother Hoy
was converted to Christ and joined the M. E. Church. In the year 1857 or
1858, she united herself with the United Brethren Church, in which she lived
a consistent life and died a triumphant death. The great characteristic
principle of her life was kindness. No human being or even animal was
allowed to suffer if aid from her was possible. As a christian she was
devoted to Christ, rather than to any denomination. Often in the night when
all the family had retired to sleep, her voice would awaken some member of
the family by pleading in prayer in the garden or orchard, for herself and
family. she was a great sufferer from a physical infirmity. But all is
changed- no more suffering, no more prayer, all is turned to praise- mother
is in heaven. This is the first death in the family in fifty- five (or 33)
years, although three of the sons were in the army.

Additional notes from the research of Alice (Worden) Hallead, daughter of
Edgar and Minnie (Hoy) Worden via email from Rosanne Lomprey with original
spelling errors included. Alice Worden Hallead was gr grandaughter of Mary
Stump
"Dave Andrew Hoy who was born in Chocan Twp. Clearmont County, March 31,
1808 and died in Shelby County Ill. This mother was mary Stump Hoy
daughter of Joel Stump and Catherine Stumpf Stump. Mary
Stump was born in Fairfield County Ohio July 2 1816. Her Parents Joel
and CAtherine Stump, and her grand parents Conrad and Julian Stump are
buried in Stump Cemetery, Pickaway County Ohio. Mary Stump Hoy died
Feb. 2, 1892. and is buried beside her husband in Shelby County Illinois.
According to the obituary written by her nephew, Elsworth Stump she was
first married to Peter Hoy Brother of David Andrew. They had one son Simon
Peter who was born June 16, 1837. I do not have the date of her marriage to
David but her first son John B. was born Mary 16, 1840. According to
Elsworth Stump's accounty David and mary Hoy moved in 1840 from Pickaway
county to Putnam county , and lived in a cabin in the wilderness six miles
from a wagon road. In 1843 they returned to Pickaway Co. David and Mary
had 10 children-- "" In Sept. 1854 David and Mary Hoy left Ohio by covered
wagon one account says they left from Jamestown and another says from
Zanesville) to make a new home in the prairie county of Shelby County
Illinois. they arrived in Shelbyville. Illinois Oct.6 1854. It is said
that the three oldes boys walked all the Way. and they poured Whiskey in

Notes on David Andrew-
Someone did a cemetery lookup and says the date of birth is in May. I've
found some mistakes on cemetery markers before, so am not sure if this is a
mistake or not.

According to his wife's obituary, David Andrew and his family moved from
Pickaway Co., OH in 1840 to Putnam Co., OH where they lived for three
years. They lived in a wilderness, in a cabin, six miles from a wagon road.
In 1843 they returned to Pickaway Co., OH and in 1854 on the 6th day of Oct
they arrived in Shelbyville, Il. They resided there the rest of their
lives. About the time David Andrew moved his family to Shelby Co., IL
several other families in the same area of OH as David lived, did the same.

David Andrew is listed in The Combined History of Shelby and Moultrie Cos,
IL 1881 as a resident of Pickaway Twp., Post Office Moawequa, father of
Wesley Hoy, native of Fairfield Co., OH, settled in Shelby Co., 1856.

"Simon P. Hoy is now district agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, with headquarters at Decatur.... [He is] a native of Fairfield county, Ohio, his birth having there occurred on the 16th of June, 1837. He comes of New England ancestry. His father, Peter Hoy, was born in Pickaway county, Ohio, and there spent a portion of his early life. He was a farmer by occupation and was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He possessed considerable musical talent--a characteristic of the Hoy family-- and had a splendid voice. He died early in life, however, passing away on the 13th of August, 1837, his death being the result of a fall in crossing a stream on his return from church. He was a most devoted Christian gentleman, zealous in behalf of the church and its upbuilding, and his life was ever in harmony with his professions. Although small in stature he possessed great strength. He had married Miss Mary Stump, a daughter of Joel Stump, who removed to Ohio from Pennsylvania when a young man, first settling in Pickaway county. He spent the remainder of his life in the Buckeye state. He was a man of great moral worth, of unquestioned honor and integrity and of high ideals as to family life. He was of German lineage and was a member of the Lutheran church which was also the faith of his ancestors. His daughter, after losing her first husband, was again married in 1839 to David A. Hoy, a brother of her first husband. By him she had ten children who reached years of maturity, namely; John B., who served in the Civil war as a member of Company H., forty-first Volunteer Infantry; Joel W., who was also a defender of the Union during the Civil war for three months; Katherine E.; David W.; Jacob M.; Joshua; Albert; Mary E.; and Julia, the wife of John W. Jinks. All of the family are living. Past and present of the city of Decatur and Macon County, Illinois. Chicago: S.J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1903, pp 703-704.
