OBIT: Windsor Gazette, Widnsor, Shelby Co., IL, May 11, 1905:
Valentine Barnhart, Sr., was stricken with apoplexy early Sunday morning at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. E. C. Andrews, in Gays. About 2 o'clock in the afternoon he was again stricken. He never recovered consciousness from the second stroke and died early Monday morning, May 8, 1905. The news of his death came as a great shock to Mr. Barnhart's many friends, as he had been in fairly good health. He spent part of the winter in Arkansas and after a few weeks in Windsor he went to Gays for a visit with his granddaughter and her family, of whom he was very fond. He was down town Saturday night, rested well that night, and ate a hearty breakfast an hour or two before first stricken.
Funeral services and burial were held at Ash Grove church Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. C.G. Johnston of Windsor M.E. church preaching the sermon. Mr. Barnhart having been a member of the Methodist church for many years. Burial was under the auspices if Windsor and Gays Odd Fellows, Mr. Barnhart being a member of the Windsor lodge. He was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He was honest and upright in all his dealings and his word was a good as his bond.
Mr. Barnhart was born in Fairfield, county, Ohio, Jan 17, 1832, and therefore was 73 years, 3 months, and 21 days old. He married Miss Cynthia Rice March 15, 1855. They became the parents of six children. Mrs. Barnhart and three of the children preceded husband and father to the better land. Three sons, Henry W., John D., and Thomas E. are left.
Mr. Barnhart was a genuine Christian. He joined the M.E. church at the age of 22. Of recent years he held his membership at Sulphur Spring. Mr. Barnhart and family moved to this community directly from Ohio in 1865.
