OBIT:
Daniel was killed in saw mill explosion with
son William as described
in the Miami Sentinal of 4 Aug 1859:
Boiler Exploded---Three Men Killed
A most afflictive casualty occurred in Union township, in this county,
on Monday, 25th ult. While Daniel Hart, his son William and John Hipple,
were occupied with in the the Steam Saw Mill of the former, the boiler
exploded, demolishing the building and almost burying the occupants in the
ruins. A large heated iron shaft fell upon the breast of Hipple, literally
crushing his body, and leaving its parched imprint upon his flesh. He
neither moved nor spoke, but breathed heavily for some hours and died.
William's thigh was muched, from the body to the knee, and his elbow was
dislocated. He died the next day.
Daniel Hart was found at the mouth of the furnace, embedded in hot
castings and brick. He was much bruised and died on the following Monday.
The multitude that attended his funeral on Tuesday, attest the esteem in
which he was held by his neighbors. Mr. Hart retained the use of his senses
to the last moment of his life, having made his will in the mean time.
They all leave wives and children to lament their untimely fate.
Dr. Banks, of Fulton county, and one Jacob Uhee, were in the mill at the
time of the accident, but had, just a moment previous to the explosion,
stepped into an adjoining room, and thus, perhaps, escaped a similar fate.
The unfortunate men were aware of the danger, and in endeavoring to avert
the dreadful catastrophe, lost their lives.
Dates in the above news reports do not correlate to death dates reported on tombstone markers. William's stone documents date of death as 21 July 1859, not the 26th as indicated from the text of the news article.
