This past Friday, the winners of the contest were announced. Each winner was also presented with a savings bond, courtesy of Ridings-Xamis in Shelbyville.
First place winner is Alicia Foor. Alicia is eight years old and a third grader at Tower Hill Elementary.
Her winning entry was a collage style picture of a tornado.
The picture is a reminder of a personal experience. Nearly four years ago, a tornado destroyed the Foor's home.
"My mom and I were the only ones home. My sister was at a sleep-over and my dad was at a board meeting," Foor said.
Foor and her family were well informed about what to do during the emergency.
"We had to stay in the bathroom because it was the only room without windows," she said.
Foor said that the two had to keeping checking different televisions for information. Lightning from the storm destroyed the reception.
Joni Foor, Alicia's mom, was on hand when the award was presented.
"I'm so proud of her. She has dealt with this so well. I'm glad she isn't afraid to talk about it," she said.
Her father, Clint and sister, Olivia were also there for the award presentation. [Shelbyville Daily Union, Shelbyville, IL; found in archives and date of original publication not shown.]
NOTE: In the obituary of Gilbert Barringer, who died July 8, 2004, it
mentions a surviving daughter, Joyce Pennypacker and husband Enos "Tom" of
Palm Bay, FL., along with grandchildren Bradley Foor, Clinton Foor, and great
granddaughters Kimberly Foor, Cyrstal Foor, Kayla Foor, Olivia Foor, and

1967 - Car Plunges into Creek, Five Persish - Circleville, Ohio - A 36-year-old woman learning how to drive hit the accelerator instead of the brake at an intersection north of here Tuesday night, sending the car plummeting into a rain swollen creek. She and her four children drowned. Her husband, who was teaching her, survived. Vester Phillips, 31, of rural Ashville told authorities he jumpe from the car before it submerged completely in Big Walnut Creek, then tried to rescue his wife and children. But swift current force him to leave the water, he said. Sheriff's deputies recovered the bodies of Ruby Phillips, 36, and sons Gary, 7, and Donald, 3. Bodies of the other two youngsters, Diana 11 and Wendell, 9, could not be found in nearly five hours of searching by scuba divers. Additional divers resumed the search this morning. At one point during the search for bodies, a distraught Phillips, who suffered only minor physical injuries, tried to jump back into the water. He was restrained by sheriff's deputies and onlookers. A shaken Phillips told of climbing back to the road hysterically and trying to flag down four cars that passed. None stopped, he said. Finally, a farmer who lives nearby heard Phillips' shouts. He turned in the first report to authorities. [Athens Messenger, Athens, Ohio, May 17, 1967]

George J. Shultz, a progressive business man of Barnes, Kan., and the owner of the only lumber yard in that thriving town, is a native of Ohio. He was born in Fairfield county, that State, April 30, 1864. His parents, George J. and Katherine (Smith) Shultz, were both natives of Wurtemburg, Germany. The father was engaged in farming and stock raising in Ohio until his death in 1880. The mother died six years later in that State. George J. Shultz was reared on his father's farm in Fairfield county, educated in the public schools, and remained at home with his parents while they lived. After the death of his mother, in 1889, he came to Kansas, locating in Washington county, where he worked as a farm laborer for M. Solt. He worked hard and economized, and in a few years was able to buy a farm for himself, and for sixteen years he was engaged in farming and stock raising. He was very successful in feeding cattle for the market, and was also a very extensive hog raiser and successful in this line of endeavor and made money. He kept a good breed of hogs, which proved profitable and yielded a handsome profit. He fed and sold from forty to 150 head of cattle each year, and about 150 head of hogs. Mr. Shultz remained on his farm until 1908, when he sold it and engaged in the lumber business at Barnes, which he has continued to the present time.
Mr. Shultz was married, February 10, 1892, to Miss Alice Glick. She was a daughter of Manassah and Eliza (Hartman) Glick, both natives of Pennsylvania, where the father was engaged in farming. Manassah Glick was a second cousin of former Governor Glick, of Kansas. The Glick family removed from Pennsylvania to Ohio and made their home in Fairfield county, where Mr. Shultz met and married his wife. To Mr. and Mrs. Shultz have been born six children: Bernice, student in the University of Kansas and a member of the class of 1914; Eliza (deceased); Madeline, a student at Canal Winchester, Ohio; Ernestine and Glick, attending school in Barnes, and Alice, the baby. The wife and mother departed this life, after a brief illness, December 7, 1913. Mrs. Shulz was a woman of noble Christian character whose untimely death brought grief to her many friends and neighbors as well as to her immediate family. The family are members of the Lutheran church.
Mr. Shultz served as trustee of Barnes township from 1902 to 1906 and is now serving his twelfth year as a member of the Barnes school board. Politically he is a Democrat.
