|

INDEX

[3231] DUVALL Dr. Jeremiah Duvall was one of the earliest pioneers on Broad
Top, Bedford County, coming from near Annapolis, Md., shortly after his
return from the Revolutionary War. He was a physician of good standing
and a local preacher in the M. E. Church, dying at the age of 82 years in
1832. His son, Dr. Asa Duvall studied medicine with his father, married
Leah Akers (sister of John Akers) of Akersville and they had six
children. He obtained land from the heirs of Hon. John J. Hamilton in
1833. In 1859 he and his wife deeded same land, which was located in
Brush Creek Township, Fulton County, to their son, Benjamin (B. P.)
Duvall, it being the farm which his grandson, Blaine J. Hixson, has spent
45 years of his life on. The 70-year-old house on that farm burned in
1939, but Mr. Hixson immediately built a modern one on the old
foundation. B. P. Duvall was married twice and reared his family on this
farm, living there until his death in 1902. He was very active in the
work of the church and many of his descendants are engaged in religious
activities in various places.
His son, George A. Duvall, is a minister; his son, W. H. Duvall,
gave three sons to the ministry; his son, A. W. Duvall, has probably
attended more sessions of Sunday School at Akersville than any person now
living; a grandson, O. R. Duvall, was one of Akersville praying fathers;
his grandson, George S. Hixson, is a minister, and the writer is a grand
daughter. Mrs. Elizabeth Foor, 82 years old, a daughter of B. P. Duvall,
who lives in the W. F. Hixson home, has been tenderly cared for by her
grand niece, Mrs. Naomi Hixson Strait, since she suffered a hip injury in1940.
Porter G. Duvall, son of O. R. Duvall, is Sheriff of Fulton
County at the present time.
There are more descendants of B. P. Duvall living at Akersville
than any other name at the present time. "History of Akersville Pennsylvania

NAME/DOB/DOD/POBurial: "Cemeteries of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH", Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 1996, p 240.

NOTE: Not Isaac nor any surviving sons are mentioned in mother's 1885 obituary. Perhaps the two "daughters" are actually two 'sons'?

NOTE: Did Isaac G. Hoy marry two Alice's? In the cemetery book, there is one listed as Alice M. Hoy 1866-1933, aged 67y, who is buried in the 2nd addition, part 3, lot 344, grave 1. Her next of kin listed is Isaac G. Hoy, Harold Grove Hoy, son, and daughter Ethelyn Marie. Isaac is buried in the same section but in grave 2. This seems to definitely be a wife. However, there is another Alice Hoy buried in the cemetery, and the only info shown in the book is that she was buried in an unknown addtion, lot 1, grave 14, on Jan. 16, 1953. The obit for this Alice shows that she was survived by two sons, Hubert and Harold. Her obit also shows she was 86, making her born about 1867 which is the same age as the other Alice Hoy. Was this latter Alice a step-mother, and the obit should've read that she was survived by two STEP sons?

DOB/POB/Parentage: "History of Fairfield County and Representative Citizens", Charles C. Miller, 1912, p 680. Year of birth shown in this bio is 1864.

"Isaac G. HOY, whose valuable stock and general grain farm of 159 acres is situated in Bloom Township, Fairfield County, O., two and one-half miles south of Lithopolis, O., was born in this township in 1864, and is a son of Abraham and Maranda (CUSTER) HOY.

The HOY family is one of the old and substantial ones of Bloom township, the first of it's members coming from Pennsylvania and in the house that the great-grandfather built, several generations were born. Abraham HOY was a farmer all his life and was a well known and highly respected man. His death occurred in his seventy-second year. He married Maranda CUSTER, who was born in Hocking County, O., and they had three children namely: Isaac G.: Emma, who is deceased: and Joshua, who is also deceased.

Isaac G. HOY has been a farmer, as was his father and grandfather, and has spent his life on his present well improved property. He married Alice RAINEY, a daughter of William G. RAINEY, the latter who came to Fairfield from Guernsey County, when a young man. He married Caroline ALSPACH and they had four children: John, Addie, Alice and William, the eldest being deceased. Mr. and Mrs. HOY have had three children: Harold, Marie, and Hubert. Both sons are yet at home giving their father assistance, but the daughter is deceased. Politically Mr. HOY is identified with the Democratic party and is now serving in the office of township trustee. He belongs to the Knights of Pythias and attends lodge at Canal Winchester. With his family he is a member of the Evangelical church, in which he is a steward and a member of the board of trustees. "History of Fairfield County and Representative Citizens", Charles C. Miller, 1912, p 680.

[26304] DOM/POM: Names listed as Samuel Gibby and Annis Elder. FHL Batch M513352, Franklin Co., Ohio, probate marriages 1840-1852.

I am very confused with the merge of these families. The first hint that I had that Annice first married someone else is because she was so much older than Samuel Gibby. When looking for a marriage record, I found that Samuel Gibby married Annis ELDER in 1850. Elder, I presume, is her prior married name, and I can find an Anna Elder in the 1850 census and lo and behold, Samuel "Gabby" is listed with them -- her future husband. In her father's will, she's mentioned as daughter Annie Gibea. What confuses me is the other Gibbey's listed in some of the census's with Annice. Are they the siblings of Samuel?

Courtright, wife of Christian M., died Nov. 11, 1872, aged 21y 10m 21d. This would make her date of birth Dec. 21, 1850. Since Catherine supposedly had a daughter named Gertrude who wasn't born until July 5, 1872, the more likely death date is that of Nov. 11, 1872. Also, her date of birth figured to March 21, 1850. She would've appeared as a child in the 1850 census. She doesn't appear until the 1860 one at age 9.
