[26646] 1920 - Domestic Discords in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Franklin Tipton - prompts Mrs. Tipton to seek relief in the divorce court -- defendant is small storekeeper. An action for divorce and alimony was filed in court Friday afternoon by Mrs. B. F. Tipton against her husband, Benjamin F. Tipton, Sr. She says they were married Jan. 1913 and have not lived together since May 1916. She charges cruelty and gross neglect. She says once before they were married while on their way from church he told her if she would marry him he would give to her his life insurance policy but he never did after they were married and when he collected a payment of $1500 he never gave her a cent, she says. Their domestic troubles started a year after the wedding when he asked her to sign an agreement that each should relinguish claim on the others property. This she repeatedly refused to do. On one of the occasions he told her that the next time he married it would be "for love not money." Plaintiff declares that in order to defeat her claims for alimony he has turned his property over to his son and daughter of a former marriage. She asks that they be made parties defendant to the alimony action and --?quired to set up their claims, if any to the real estate. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, July 24, 1920]

1920 - Temporary Alimony. In the Tipton divorce case, Benjamin Franklin Tipton was ordered in court this morning by Judge Shell to pay his wife, Emma M. Tipton, the son of $50 temporary alimony. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, August 6, 1920]

"Hugh Creighton, a native of Ireland, moved to this state from PA in 1804. He resided two or three years at Zanesville, and then settled in Bloomfield [Pickaway Co. OH]. In 1816, he came to Walnut [township] and bought...100 acres... with his son, Samuel, built the mills now owned by Mr. Spindler. He finally moved to Fairfield county, near Lithopolis, where he died, in 1858, in his 85th year. His wife was 87 at her death, surviving her husband 8 years. They had four sons and a daughter, now widow of Cyrus Hedges, and residing in Walnut. Two of the sons survive--Samuel, in Lithopolis, and Joseph, a Methodist minister, at present presiding elder of the Chillicothe... William, the oldest, was among the early pioneers of Iowa. Henry was murdered by his wife in January, 1877. She was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to the State penitentiary for 3 years.", "History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio", Williams Bros., 1880, p 276.

Tombstone photo: Hugh Creighton, son of Edward, Father of William, Jane, Henry, Samuel, Joseph H. Born in the county of Tyrone, Ireland. Died May 19th, 1857, aged 84 years.

"Remarks by Rev. J. H. Creighton. Rev. J. H. Creighton, of Lithopolis, was then introduced. Said he: My father came from the south of Ireland when he was 19 years old. He could neither read or write, but fell in company with an Irish weaver, one of Wesley's men, and sat by his loom during one winter where he learned reading, writing, arithmetic and surveying. This early ignorance was no fault of his, for, where he came from the inhabitants mostly live in mud cabings, smoke poor tobacco, drink bad whisky, sleep with their dogs and swear at the government. Neither was it any want of ability, for when he came to happy America (as he often called it) he became one of the best teachers and scholars in the country. He came to Franklinton about the same time that Louis Sullivant came, and became one of Sullivant's surveyors. I cannot give the dates but it was a century ago. My father had the first store in Franklinton. His chief customres were Indians. They were gentlemen i nblankets, supported by the government without work -- had an aversion to labor because, as they said, it was a disgrace to work (women excepted). To this day they hold to this, and to this day the government supports them, or most of them. This is no reflection on the Indian as a rae, for any race living without work will be a race of vagabonds. I heard my father say that he used to hunt his cow in the woods where High street is now. It was a dense forest of beech trees, and he could walk from one end of High street to the other on beech roots." Speech during Pioneer's Day. Original data: Fitzpatrick, Stephen A.,. History of Columbus celebration, Franklinton centennial. Columbus, Ohio: Press of the New Franklin Print. Co., 1897, pp 103-104.

[6675] NOTE: 4 children of "Daniel and Susanna" were baptised on 02 Jan 1814. There is another entry, though. The first one before all the children is a "Margareta Diltein" b 24 Sep 1784, baptised the same day. Instead of parents listed, it says "husband Daniel Diltein". Is Margareta another wife of Daniel, and she was baptised the same day as her husband and the children of her husband by a former wife? LATER NOTE: According to huge documentation on the Dildine GenForum site, these four children who are listed as the children of Daniel and Susanna are Daniel and Margaret's. Perhaps "Susanna" is a middle name, or it was incorrectly read from the original records.

DOB/DOD: From GenForum messages., January 2001.
DOM: From Dildine GENFORUM message by Larry L. Dildine in January of 2001. He states that according to Margaret's obituary in the Seneca Advertiser March 21, 1862, they were married when she was 19 and he 22 in PA in June 1803. Daniel's obituary was in the same newspaper for October 3, 1872, giving the same marriage year. They came to Fairfield Co., OH in 1805/1806, and lived in that area when all children were born. They moved to Seneca Co., OH in 1824.

If you figure 5y, 5m, 29d, it is Uriah's date of birth according to church records. Since Uriah does not appear in census records with them, I'm assuming this entry in the cemetery book is for Uriah. This person is also listed beside David M., and two other stones that say child or daughter of "D. & L".

[28055] PARENTAGE NOT DOCUMENTED! Believe she's the "unnamed" child in the 1880 census. Her mother was Georgianna but do not know father at this time.

DOB/DOD/POBurial: Name listed as William E. Burk, dad, 1878-1937, and Drusilla, mom, 1880-1973. "Cemeteries of Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH", Fairfield County Gen. Soc., Chapter OGS, 1996, p 68.

NOTE: Tombstone apparently says 1973, yet death index shows 1974. An obituary is in the Jan. 18, 1974 Columbus Dispatch (viewed index only) so the 1973 date on the tombstone is incorrect.

1936 - When William Bland died, Drusilla Burk was the informant for his death certificate. He was shown as an "imbecile", "feeble-minded" and "deaf an dumb" on various censuses. William Bland's mother was Georgianna (Campbell), yet Drusilla didn't know Georgianna's first name. Georgianna married Solomon Raver (Drusilla's dad), Francis Bland, and Francis Myers. I can't find for certain who Drusilla's mother was, as perhaps Solomon didn't die before Georgianna's next marriage, but got divorced and Solomon married another person who became Drusilla's mother. Otherwise, Drusilla doesn't remember her own mother's name.

1937 - listed as surviving sister, Mrs. Druscilla Burk of 3164 Morse-Rd in brother Charles Raver's Dec. obituary. Was the informant for his death certificate, and when it came to listing his mother, it was put as "unknown" Campbell. I can't find Drusilla in the 1900 census unless she's the "Etta" in 1900 with Edward Burk. I also don't know when Solomon Raver, their father, died. Perhaps Drusilla and brother Charles are actually half siblings rather than full... especially if she can't remember her brother's mother's name. (Which seems even more strange since the mother's name is Georgia Ann and Drusilla named a daughter Georgia).

DOD/POD: Drusilla Burk, resided Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, died Jan. 17, 1974 in a longterm care facility in Columbus at age 93, widowed. Ancestry.com and Ohio Department of Health. 1903 - Mrs. Samuel McGowan, her daughter Miss Lida McGowan, and Mrs. A. S. Kaser left Saturday for Springfield where Mrs. McGowan will have an operation performed on her eyes by Dr. Prince. She is 80 years old and the operation may prove serious as the result of her advanced age. [Daily Review, Decatur, IL., April 5, 1903]

1905 - A pretty surprise party was given Mrs. Samuel McGowan at her home 1303 North College street Tuesday afternoon, by a party of her friends, the hours being from 2 to 5 p.m. Mrs. McGowan was 81 years old that day. The surprise was complete in every way. On account of Mrs. McGowan's age it was feared if they all went in together it would be too much of a shock for her nerves, and it was planned that they go in a few at a time. Mrs. McGowan was not aware that a surprise was being given her until a large number of the ladies had arrived... [Daily Review, Decatur, IL., May 24, 1905]

1910 - Mrs. Samuel McGowan is today celebrating her eighty-sixth anniversary. The celebration is the gathering of her daughters at her home, 1303 North College street. They are: Mrs. Rose McKelvey of Chicago, Mrs. A. S. Kazar and Miss Lydia McGowan of Decatur. Mrs. McGowan is in good health and her mind is perfectly clear. Her husband is 87 years old. They ar eone of the oldest couples in the city. [Daily Review, Decatur, IL., May 23, 1910]

1918 - One of Oldest Decatur Residents. Mrs. Elizabeth McGowan to be 95 Thursday. Next Thursday will be the ninety-fifth birthday anniversary of Mrs. Elizabeth McGowan, 1303 North College Street, one of Decatur's oldest residents. No special observation is planned for the day because of her condition. While not sick, and in fact in very fair health, yet her extreme age forcers her to remain in her bed practically all of the time. She is able to have callers and, in fact, expects many of her friends to call on her on that day, as they usually do. Her four daughters will also spend the day with her. They are Mrs. F. G. Stewart of Chicago and Mrs. A. S. Kazar, Mrs. Katherine McKelvey and Miss Lyda McGowan all of Decatur. [Decatur Review, Decatur, IL, May 21, 1918]

OBIT: Mrs. Elizabeth McGowan, widow of Samuel McGowan, and one of Decatur's oldest citizens, died at 7:50 o'clock Sunday evening at her home, 1303 North College street. She was 95 years old last may 23. Infirmities incident to old age caused her death. Mrs. McGowan moved to Clinton from Lancaster, PA., in 1855. She continued to reside in Clinton until 26 years ago, when the family moved to Decatur, and this has been her home ever since. Mrs. McGowan was an invalid for many years, but careful nursing by her daughters had much to do with extending her life. For the past four years she has been blind and helpless. Mrs. McGowan is survived by four daughters and one son, Mrs. F. G. Stewart, Miss Lida McGowan, Mrs. A. F. Kaser and Mrs. Catherine McKelvey, all of Decatur, and Charles McGowan of Fresno, Cal. There is also a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Anna McGowan in Springfield. The funeral will be held from the residence, 13030 North College street, at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Interment will be in Fairlawn cemetery. [Decatur Review, Decatur, IL, June 17, 1918]
