"Samuel Creighton was the local nurseryman, and had his land in nursery stock. He was devoted to his business and, I think, had a watchful eye upon every single growing plant in his care. He was well educated and wrote a treatise on the grapevine and the peculiar treatment it required, which was far the best I have ever seen on that subject. More than that he lived his religion, which was strictly Methodism. I think he was an appointed preacher by the Conference, but I never heard him preach. Nevertheless, I took him for an example of what a Christian should be.", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 41.

"Mr. Samuel Creighton, of Lithopolis, Ohio, subsequently invented his 'Improved Patent Insect Destroyer' which is especially intended for this insect. It is a hand machine of a very simple nature, consisting of a plate with two curved sides and a handle. In using, it is held in the right hand and placed at one side of the potato hill, with the upper end more or less inclined, according to the size of the plants...".
The Horticulturist, and Journal of rural art and rural taste

"Plums--The Curculio; What to do with them. S. Creighton, of Lithopolis, brought plums into the Columbus market the past summer by the wagon load. Says he has tried various methods for preventing the depredations of the Curculio, and has at last settled upon 'the spread sheet and jarring process' as the most effectual. One year he applied with a syringe a preparation of line, soap, and &c., (?), with very good sucess, saving the plums; but the Curculio, driven from its first choice, resorted to his peaches and apples, nearly destroying the crop. By the jarring he is enabled to destroy the curculio, and thus not only save his plums, but his peaches and other fruit."

"VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 3360 met recently with president, Ruth Curl, calling to order 28 members. Secretary, Babe Mansfield, read the minutes of the last meeting; they stood approved as read. Treasurer, Grace Baxter, read the treasurer's report and it stood approved subject to audit. ... The charter was draped in memory of Mildred Coy and Barbara Ann Hallard. There also was a service for the 9-11 victims." [Crescent News, Defiance, Ohio, Sept. 19, 2007]
"Graveside services for Barbara Ann Hallard, 73, Defiance, who died Sept. 1, 2007, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Riverview Memory Gardens with Rev. Joe Chrisman officiating. Mast-Mock-Hoffman-Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home handled the arrangements." [Defiance Crescent News, Defiance, Ohio, Nov 1, 2007]
My mother's cremains were buried after a small service on November 3rd, 2007 at the cemetery. The service took place in the mausoleum at 11 a.m. Afterward, we all went to the VFW for a luncheon. I stayed back with my husband in order to see my mother placed in her grave, and to toss a penny in the grave as well. My father had always wanted to go to Alaska. It was his dream for many years. He never got the opportunity. When some friends of mine went there a few years ago, I asked them to bring back a coin. I've had it in my possesion for 2-3 years, hoping not to use it for many years to come. The act may seem a tad silly, but it meant something to me to be able to give my dad a piece of Alaska.
