ELIJAH J. ANDERS is both a successful farmer and an active business man at Sidney. He has always lived in close touch with the soil and with agricultural conditions, and that experience has been invaluable to him as a grain merchant.

Mr. Anders has spent nearly all his life in Champaign County but was born at Canal Winchester, Ohio, May 19, 1875. His parents, John and Mary (KRUMM) ANDERS, were both born in Germany. His father was brought to America by his parents when about two years of age, the family locating in Ohio. He grew up there, took up farming and in 1878 came to Champaign County, locating in Philo Township. He and his wife are still living in Sidney. They had a large family of children, named briefly as follows: William, of Sidney; Elijah and Etta, twins, the latter the wife of Charles SHIPPS of Fairmount, Illinois; Emma, wife of S. T. MOSIER, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Henry, of New Berlin, Illinois; Minnie, wife of Arthur COLE, of Block, Illinois; Mary, wife of Charles THOMPSON, of Urbana; Mrs. Archie J. Hall, of Sidney; and John, now deceased.

Elijah J. Anders grew up on his father's farm in Champaign County and lived at home with his parents until he was twenty-six. In the meantime he had acquired a good education in the district schools and also in the business college at Champaign. When he began farming on his own account it was as a renter of 155 acres, and after entering business at Sidney in 1913 he continued to supervise his farming interests. At Sidney Mr. Anders joined Mr. Golden in the implement business a year and a half. Then for fifteen months he was assistant bookkeeper in the State Bank and has since been manager of the Sidney Grain Company. He is utilizing his important connections and acquaintance with the grain raisers in this section of Illinois to build up a highly profitable and successful business.

Mr. Anders married, February 26, 1902, Miss Alice PORTERFIELD. They have two bright young children, Dorothy Mildred and Clifford Burt, both of whom are receiving their education in the local schools. Mr. Anders is a Democrat and is a present member of the town board of Sidney. He and his family attend worship at the Methodist Episcopal Church. "A Standard History of Champaign County, Illinois," J. R. Stewart, Supervising Editor, The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago and New York, Vols. I & II, 1918

DOD/POD: Elijah John Anders, died March 6, 1949 in Champaign Co., IL; age 73. [Illinois Statewide Archives; online]

1870 - although the following info states his date of death was after 1870, this may be in error, as he is not listed with wife and family in the 1870 census.

A Charles Dagen served in the 13th OVI, Company I. "History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio", Williams Bros., 1880, p 158.

CIVIL WAR: It appears that the father, Charles, and sons Benjamin F. and William H. all served in the Civil War in some capacity. There seems to be a discrepency
in some records which follows:

Listed in the "1929 Illinois Roll of Honor" for La Salle Co., IL, [Illinois Statewide Archives] is as follows:

B. F. Dagen, Civil War, Co., K 85 Oh Inf., V 2 p 41Riverwood Cem.
William H. Dagen, Civil War, Co. I 43 OH Inf., V 2 P 41 Riverwood Cem.

The company in which Willam H. Dagen is shown as serving with is actually the one his father, Charles, served in.

"Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War", there are three DAGEN's listed, all shown being buried in Riverview Cemetery in Streator. According to
various websites, Riverview and Riverwood are the same cemetery in Streator

B. F. Dagen, 85th Ohio Inf. died 08 May 1876,
Charles DAGEN, 43rd Inf. OH, died 06 Feb 1873,
William H. DAGEN, 4th Cavalry IN; died 06 Feb 1876,

The National Park Services' website "Civil War Sodliers and Sailors System" shows:
Dagen, Charles, 43rd Reg. Ohio Inf. Co. I (alternate name shown as Charles Dagon)
Dagen, Benjamin F., 85th Ohio Inf. Co. K
Dagen, William H., 10th Indiana Cavalry, Co. L (alternate name William H. Dagan)

Benjamin F. Dagen enlisted June 2, 1862 at the age of 18 into Company K, 85th OVI, and mustered out of same on Sep. 23, 1862 at Camp Chase, Ohio. The 85th was a three-month cregiment and was used to aid in guarding the large number of Confederate prisoners at Camp Chase.

Charles Dagen's enlisted on Jan. 21, 1862 at age 51 into Co. I., 43rd OVI, and mustered out July 13, 1865 at Louisville, KY. According to various sources, Company I was from Fairfield County, Ohio.

William Dagen enlisted in the 10th Ind. Cavalry, Co. L on Jan. 13, 1864, promoted to full sergeant, and mustered out of same company on Aug. 31, 1865 at Vicksburg, MS. The regiment was organized in the fall and winter of 1862-63 at Vincennes and Columbus, In., and left the state May 3, moving to Nashville and to Pulaski, TN. Several battles fought, especially in late 1864 in Alabama and Tennessee.

Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Kistler, wife of Joshua Kistler, died last evening at 7 o'clock at the family residence, near Royal Center, aged 65y. For several months Mrs. Kistler had been very ill, and her last days were filled with suffering from which death came as a gentle relief. Death was due to apoplexy, the attack coming about two weeks ago. Mrs. Kistler was a native of Ohio, being born at Lithopolis, Ohio, March 28, 1840, and where her early life was spent. The bereaved husband and three sons survive, the latter being attorneys Frank M. and George S. Kistler of this city, and Charles Kistler who resides at the homestead. Besides these, two children died in infancy. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 10:00 from the Baptist Church at Royal Ceneter, conducted by Rev. Morgan. Interment in the Royal Center cemetery. [Logansport Reporter, Logansport, IN, Jan. 11, 1905]

NOTE: The name "Hasthar" looks as if it was crossed out after written, OR, the single line was placed there FIRST indicating that the surname preceding it on previous columns would be the same, in this case, "Hartman". Then where it specifies the relationship of the individual, it looks as if both "Daughter" and "brother" were once written there -- it's hard to tell which one was the last. The sex is 'female', but then the occupation is dairy laborer making me believe it's more likely to be a male.

1917 - Presiding in probate court today Judge Freeman dismissed for want of
jurisdiction claims by B. F. Stoltey, Elizabeth Wnedling Stoltey and the
First Church of Christ Scientist against the estate of Amanda C. Koch, late
of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Stoltey, who are practitioners in the Christian
Science church, presented claims aggregating $140 for readings conducted at
the bedside of Mrs. Koch during her last illness. Mrs. Hoy, daughter of Mrs.
Koch and administrator of the estate, is a Christian Scientist and was
willing to pay for the readings. The other daughter, Mrs. Mahalah Birdzell
of Champaign is a non-believer in that faith however, and refused to sign a
chock jointly with mrs. Hoy against the estate's account in the Citizens bank
of Champaign. The readers and the church then presented three claims against
the estate which were disposed of by Judge Freeman today. [Urbana Daily
Courier, Saturday, April 14, 1917, Page: 1].

NOTE: In the online Ohio death index at the Ohio Historical Society, the only Loeffler who died in 1916 is "John J. Loeffler" in Franklin Co., OHio, on Sept. 7, 1916. I tried various other Loeffler spellings, and also tried any "John" who died that year in either Fairfield or Franklin, and this is the only one that appears likely.

through school together, but when such learning as was possible in the
Lithopolis schools was acquired, then our lives separated. Adam graduated at
the Lutheran Capital University and became later a professor there. Henry
studied medicine and took up a practice, I believe, in Michigan." "THE

"The seven children of "Adam" William Henry Pflueger and Anna Margaret Oehlschlaeger were John Henry "Luther" who married Anna Caroline Pauschert, became a Lutheran minister and eventually a professor at Luther Seminary, Regina, Sashatchwan, Canada and is buried at Oakridge, Tennesee. Charles William married Emma Elizabeth Volkmar of Westerville, Ohio. Charles was the first full time minister of the church my wife and I attend, Saint Paul Lutheran, Westerville, Ohio. Charles also founded Grace Lutheran, Westerville, where I was baptized and my wife and I were married. In 1916 Charles was called to lead the Lutheran outreach which was to become Lutheran Social Services in Columbus, Ohio. He served until his death in 1946. He and Emma are buried at the Saint Paul Cemetery on Walnut Street, Westerville, Ohio.
The third son Edwin Bernard married Helen Ada Schuh the daughter of another noted Capital professor. He became a Civil Engineer and helped to build the Panama Canal. They had three children, Theodore Loy, Mary Margaret and Ruth Elisabeth. Theodore Loy "Ted" participated in the Battan Death March and was a much decorated World War II hero. Ted was a genealogist and his work forms the basis for much of my work. Upon the death of his first wife, Edwin married Helen Irene Brazada.
The fourth son of Adam, George Alfred married Elsie Ann Berg of Richmond, Indiana. He was a Lutheran minister in the Sandusky County, Ohio area. The couple had four daughters: Margaret Anna, Alice Louise, Martha Elizabeth and Ruth Frieda.
The fifth son of Adam, Jesse Philip was the overacheiver in the family. He married Myrtle Alma Mauderer a Cajun descendent from New Orleans, Louisana. Upon graduation from Capital Seminary, he decided to become a missionary. To make himself a valuable missionary he attended medical school and received a Medical Doctorate specializing in tropical diseases. He took ship to India, but World War I broke out and the ship returnded to Seattle, Washington. There he physically built and founded a Lutheran Church. Some years later, he was called to become a professor of Theology at nearby Pacific Lutheran Seminary. At Pacific Lutheran he served as Team Physician for all of the schools sports. In his spare time he headed the counties Civil Defense, which being near volcanic Mount Rainier, must have been a time consuming effort. Jesse and Myrtle had six children: Jesse Philip Martin, Jr., Wilhelm Adam "Bill", Henry Gerhard "Gary", "Merle" Robert, Raymond Edwin, and Marilyn Myrtle. I am told that he was an outstanding, memorable professor. The school saw fit to name a large dormitory in his name. The couple are buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Parkland, Washington.
The sixth son was Martin Theodore "Mart" who made a career in the United States Army. Unfortunately Uncle Mart never married.
The seventh child was my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth "Mabel" who was actually born in the families apartment in Lehmann Hall, Capital University, Bexley, Ohio. Mabel grew up in the dormitory but when it became time to attend college she could not attend Capital as it was an all male school. She attended nearby Otterbein in Westerville, Ohio to become a teacher. As her brother, Charles, was a minister in Westerville she resided with him.
Mabel attended Charles and Emma's church, Saint Paul Lutheran and there she met a tall farm boy neighbor, Charles Grover "Charlie" Wurm. The couple married at Saint Paul and had eight children, the oldest being my father, Charles Donald "Don". The seven younger children are: Arthur Eugene "Art", Dr. Melvin Adam "Mel or Doc", Ray Richard "Ray", Eloise Virginia "Eloise", Mary Jane, Theodore Irvin "Ted" and Betty Anne.
This is part of the Pflueger family history which I have been blest with. Shelly, I would be interested in your connection?" [From a message board post on ancestry.com dated Oct. 29, 2008]

"Adam was the proud owner of a dog he had named Wasser. The dog came to an untimely end. The whole gang sympathized with Adam as he mournfully placed Wasser in a box, carried him to the depth of the Miner woods, and there buried him under the foliage of a huge whiteoak. My cousin, Arthur Kramer, one of the gang, furnished a doggerel, long remembered among the boys, perhaps because of it's little sense. 'Alas! Alas! poor Wasser, Adam weeps, while Wasser sleeps beneath the whiteoak tree'. "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 25.

Death certificate image. Adam Pfluger died Jan. 18, 1921 in Clyde, Sandusky Co., Ohio, aged 69y 1m 22d, married to Alice Pflueger, carcinoma of stomach. Minister. Born Nov. 21, 1851 in Lithopolis, Ohio, to John Henry Pflueger b Germany and Susan Snyder b Fairfield Co., Ohio. Buried Lithopolis Jan. 24.

The Runkle family : being an account of the Runkels in Europe, and their descendants in America. New York: T.A. Wright, 1899, p 317-318.

"Jacob Runkle (1724-1794), son of Martin Runkle (1683-1757) and Anna Catharina Keller of Wackernheim, Germany, arrived in Ameria on the ship Loyal Judith on September 2, 1743. He married Anna Maria Albright (1728-1821), daughter of John Albright. Their oldest son, Ludwig Runkle was born January 23, 1752 and baptized May 7, 1752 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hanover, PA. Ludwig Runkle married Barbara Dubs (1755-1831), daughter of Oswald Dubs, born 1720 in Zurich, Switzerland. Ludwig Runckel, Jeremias Runckel, and Jakobus Runckel appear on the Roll of the Jennings Gap (Augusta County, VA) Congregation in 1799. Ludwig Runkle and Barbara were early settlers of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH, and are buried there. Children of Ludwig Runkle, first six born in Manheim Township, York Co., PA, are:

1. Jacob Runkle, born 1774, appears in Jennings Gap, VA in 1799.
2. Catharine Runkle, born September 13, 1776, married John Teaford.
3. Christina Runkle, born October 28, 1778, married Jeremiah Runkle (1773-
1852), son of Samuel Runkle (died 1802 in VA). Samuel was the son of Jeremias Runkle (died 1766), who arrived on the ship Two Brothers on September 16, 1748. Catharine and Christina were christened at Emanuel Reformed Church in Hanover, PA.
4. Daniel Runkle, born May 10, 1783, married December 3, 1808 in Fairfield
County, OH, Mary Hoschaar, daughter of Heinrich and Margretha (Keller) Hoschaar.
5. Ludwig Runkle II, born March 16, 1785 appears to have no children.
6. Anna Maria Elizabeth Runkle, born February 1, 1787, married Sebastian Alspach. They had a son, Henry Alspach. Daniel, Ludwig and Anna Maria Elizabeth were christened at St. David's (Sherman's) Church near Hanover, PA. Their grandfather got the land grant for this church in 1775.
7. John Runkle, born July 9, 1789, married first, Barbara Robinault (1793-1835); second, Catherine (Robinault) Solt, daughters of Peter Robinault of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH. John Runkle had eleven children born in Fairfield County, OH. No proof of birth or baptism has been found for John Runkle.
8. George Runkle, born March 1, 1813 (no proof of birth or baptism), had a daughter, Rebecca, baptized in Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH on May 21, 1818. Rebecca is named in her uncle Ludwig Runkle's will, probated in October, 1836 in Franklin County, OH.

Most of this information was published in "The Runkle Family of York County, PA and Associated Families" in 1999 by June Runkle Grove. I am descended from the youngest son of Jacob Runkle and Anna Maria Albright. We rejoice because we have now found our relatives in Ohio. Ben Fisher's book simply says: 1. Ludowick Runkle, of him we have no knowledge. But he publishes incorrect information about our Lewis Runkle under the Virginia Runkles. That incorrect information continues to be quoted to this day. We have the proof...records from Germany, the immigrant's Bible and on and on. JRG [June Runkle Grove, August 2010]

J. Paul “Pap” Wilt, 94, of Pointer Road, Everett, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Pennknoll Village, Everett, PA.

He was born January 19, 1920, in Breezewood, the son of the late John and Carrie (Spade) Wilt. On Aug. 16, 1940, in Berryville, VA, he married Fay Foor who preceded him in death on March 10, 2011, ending a marriage union of 70 years. He is survived by their son, Gary, and wife Lyndall (Golden) Wilt, of Everett. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Paula and husband, Nathan Barkman, of Breezewood; Staci and husband, David Morral, of Clearville; Michael and wife, Michelle (Powell) Wilt, of Everett; Travis and wife, Cathy (Anderson) Wilt, of Mercersburg.

He is survived by twelve great-granchildren: Ashley (Barkman) and husband, Stephen McCahan; Richelle (Barkman) and husband, Daniel Weiger; Morgan (Barkman) and husband, Christopher McCahan; Jenna (Morral) and husband, Justin Risbon; Chelsea Morral and fiancé Justin Ramsey; Kenzi, and Bailey Morral; Corey and wife, Jacey (Bottenfield) Wilt and Collin Wilt; Jacob Bryce, Macen and Carter Wilt; and seven great-great grandchildren: Ella, Lydia, and Eliza McCahan; Nathan Weiger and Maddox, Harlow, and Ryker Risbon.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Paul was a 1937 graduate of Everett High School. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Breezewood. He was a past member of the Breezewood Fire Company, and formerly served on the Everett Area School Board, the Bedford Farm Bureau Board of Directors and as a trustee for the Crystal Springs Camp Meeting Association.

Paul was a lifelong dairy farmer, having lived and worked on the family farm near Breezewood from April 1, 1925, until a week before his passing. He took great joy in knowing that the farming operation would continue, as it is now operating in the fifth generation of his family. He also worked briefly on the construction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which intersected the family farm.

Paul enjoyed attending Crystal Springs Camp Meeting and nurturing his pink rosebush. His love for farming was surpassed only by his love for his family. A visit to Pap’s would not be complete without the offer of pink teaberry lozenges or orange circus peanuts from his always-full candy dish. Pap will be lovingly remembered for his keen sense of humor, optimistic outlook, strong dedication to farming, solid work ethic, resilient hardiness and true love of the land. He was a loving, helpful and devoted father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family and Friends will be received on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. at the Akers Funeral Home, 299 Raystown Road, Everett and on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel at Akers Funeral Home with Pastor Curtis Bryant officiating.

Burial will be held at Mt. Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Breezewood.

If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Wilt to the Crystal Springs Camp Meeting Association, c/o Jason Bryant, 1030 N. Breezewood Road, Breezewood, PA 15533.
