He is now the owner of 440 acres; his " bank" barn is the largest in the town ship, and his dwelling was erected in 1863-64 at a cost of $2,000. Mr. Castanien was married in the autumn of 1848, to Christina Alspach, five children resulting-Mahala, Caroline (wife of Emmet Bachtel), Frank, David and Amos E, Mrs. Castanien's demise occurred in 1861, at the age of thirty-five, and Mr. C. was married, November 25, 1863, to Miss Sophia Alspach (sister of first wife), daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Runkle) Alspach, natives of Pennsylvania, residents of Perry County, Ohio. [23020] Lithopolis -- A Lithopolis man died after a tractor rolled over on top of him Monday morning.

William Foglesong, 59, of 4999 Lithopolis Road, was plowing snow on his property when the tractor he was driving rolled over and pinned him underneath it.

Witnesses driving down the road spotted the overturned tractor and called 911.

Cory Vacca, 27, Lancaster, lives less than a mile away on Lithopolis Road. He and his friend, Jason Davis, 24, Lancaster, were on their way to work when they saw something wrong.

"We were driving, and we saw this tractor flipped over still running," said Vacca who ran to the victim's aid while Davis called 911. "He was completely buried. I tried to dig him out. He was still breathing, so I just kept talking to him. He was not conscious."

Greenfield Township Assistant Fire Chief Vic Silvia said when medics arrived on the scene, the victim was dead.

"It appears (Foglesong) was plowing his driveway with a tractor and grader when he got too close to an embankment and the tractor slid down the embankment and rolled over onto its top, pinning him underneath," stated Fairfield County Sheriff Dave Phalen in a news release.

A half-foot of snow fell Sunday night into Monday morning, followed by freezing rain.

The 911 call came in at 12:09 p.m. to the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office. Both Greenfield Township EMS and deputies were sent to the site of the accident. Foglesong was pronounced dead at the scene.

WILL: I William FOOR of the county of Fairfield in the state of Ohio of
the age of seventy five years and being of sound and disposing mind and
memory do make and publish this my last will and testament in the manner
following I direct my executor hereinafter named to pay out of my estate as
soon as possible after my decease all of my just debts.

I will and bequeath to my wife Sarah E. FOOR the tract of land on which we now reside viz eighteen acres of land in Bloom township [next word unreadable] what is known as the Egypt School house to have and to hold during her natural life and at her decease the same to be sold and equally divided between her three children viz Frank Foor, Rosetta Foor, and James Foor.

The forty acres of land bought at the administrators known as the Hudshy Farm I leave in the hands of my executor to be handled and the proceeds to be
applied to the use of my wife and children until my youngest son James Foor
becomes of age and then the same to be sold by my executor and the proceeds
distributed as follows - to my daughter Mrs. Elisabeth Gayman I will and bequeath fity Dollars ($50.00) and to Mrs. Sarah Jane [Bogest or Bozest] my
daughter fity-dollars, to Margaret Brown my daughter fifty dollars, to Mrs.
Catherine Lecrone fity-dollars, and to my Daughter Calista now in Illinoise [sic] (married last name not remembered) her that was Colista Foor I give and bequeath fity dollars, the ballance [sic] of my children by my first wife has had all I desire them to have. The Ballance of the proceeds of the forty acres above named to be distributed equally between my three youngest children, viz Frank Foor, Rosetta Foor and James Foor.
As to the household and kitchen furniture I desire that they should remain in
the hands of my wife for her use and benefit but all the rest of my chattle
property shall be appraised and sold at public sale by my executor who shall
take charge of the renting of the land and the business generally, applying
proceeds of sale and credits to the use of the family as they may need the same.
My executor shall take charge of all my business immediately after my decease and collect debts and discharge the same as fast as money can be collected to do the same to this end I appoint T. H. Dill the executor of this my last will and testament made this 19th day of January AD 1895 and signed as my last will and testament on the day above mentioned in the presence of Miss Mary Lidrick? and Henry Fishpaw. (William Foor signed the will with an X.

He had several sons by his first marriage. Some researchers speculate that he didn't associate much with his children by his first marriage because of the way he worded his will. Wonder why his sons by his 1st marriage rec'd nothing, unless he settled with them earlier with parcels of land, perhaps?
Another odd thing about this particular family is that almost all of William's siblings had their children baptised in one of the several nearby German Reformed churches, yet William and Mary did not. (Having so many children, it would seem likely that if they had been baptised, at least ONE would've showed up in the many baptismal records). According to Goslin, Mary and William even granted the church land, apparently right across the road from where they resided. So again, why aren't their children's records in that church, yet many of their nieces and nephews? Bewildering.

"Across the road from this former school, now converted into a residence, once stood a church of the Evangelical Association. The 17 1/2 perches of land on which this church was erected were granted to the trustees of this church for $5 by William and Mary FOOR. A stipulation in this grant was, whenever this land was no longer used for church purposes, it reverted back to the farm. This stipulation was quite common in the grants of land for school purposes." "Joseph Foor, who has one of the best improved farms in the county, his home being in Plain township, was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, July 6, 1848. His parents were William and Mary (Ward) Foor. His father was born in Pennsylvania, in 1816, and when only two or three years of age was brought by his parents to Ohio, settling in Fairfield county, where he was reared and married. For twenty years he engaved in farming there upon rented land and for some time, in addition to his farming operations, he conducted a shingle factory. Late in the '50s he purchased a small farm of fifty acres in Bloom township and afterward added to it a tract of fifteen acres, upon which he lived up to the time of his death. In politics he was a Democrat, and in religious connection was a Methodist for a number of years, but in later life he became associated with the Evangelical church, which erected a house of worship upon his place, and there he worshiped until his decease. He passed away August 19, 1895, and his wife, who was born Nov. 12, 1817, died on the 6th of March, 1876. Her father was a well known business man in Circleville, Ohio, at an early day. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Foor were born twelve children, and of that number the following are yet living: Irvin; Elizabeth, the wife of Israel Gayman; Sarah, wife of Charles Brown; Joseph; Calista, wife of David Brownback; Catherine, wife of Wesley Lecrone; Mary F., wife of Theodore B. Former Local Girl A Suicide
Mrs. Grant NYE, who returned from Marion, Monday, reports the death of her niece, Miss Bessie NYE, who committed suicide last Wednesday by drinking carbolic acid.
For several months she had been afflicted with a cancer of the stomach and was in a general depressed condition. Wednesday morning she left her home and went to a drug store, where she ordered some ice cream and bought the acid. When she went out she said she left a note on the table, reading as follows: "Dear papa and mama, I can't stand the pain any longer, good bye. I thank the doctor for what he has done for me, Bessie."
The girl is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Schuyler C. NYE, and was born August 11, 1898, south of Rochester a few miles. For several years she has been living in Marion. She is survived by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. Esley NYE, of near Rochester, is an uncle. The funeral was held Saturday at 10 o'clock, Rev. C. M. SHAWLEY in charge. Burial was made in the Gas City I.O.O.F. cemetery. [Fulton County, Indiana, Obits/Biogs, The Rochester Sentinel, 1913" (June 3, 1913 article), Wendell Tombaugh, 1994]

"I have a small booklet that I found at the library in Hagerstown, Maryland. It is "Nye Family" by Willis R. Nye. It is type-written and has a stamp inside "Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" June 1965. The copy at the library was a copy of a copy of a copy and one can hardly read some of the pages. The last page, pg 29, has information on Schuyler Colfax Nye. It does not mention 1st wife, Emma, but does have her child: "Ina, now Mrs Lawrence Mattix, Scottsville, Michigan"; then lists 8 more children which I assume were born of 2nd wife Cora, as it starts with Bessie (Lieugardie) b 9/29/1897 deceased. It has the date of 6 August 1942 for Schuyler's death.
I found Lawrence and Ina Mattix in the Mason County Michigan 1910, 1920 and 1930 census. They have a daughter, Carol. The wedding photo that started me on this quest is of Lawrence and Ina (Nye) Mattix." Info sent via email in October 2007.
