1923 - SAYS FOOR WAS DRUNK - Wounded Man's Brother Probes Wichita Tragedy. Ray Foor Is Said To Have Been Drinking Two Days Before He Shot Policeman. Ray H. Foor [bleached out image] slayer of a Wichita policeman probably was under the influence of liquor when he shot the officer at a dance hall the night before Thanksgiving according to Foor's brother, A. C. Foor of Covington, Ky., who returned last night from Wichita where he investigated the case. It is said Foor had been drinking corn liquor and had been intoxicated nearly two days. A. C. Foor has hired Sam Amidon, of Wichita to handle his brother's case. A. L. Foor, father of Ray Foor, father of Ray Foor, arrived in Emporia last night from his home in Frankfort, Ind., and went directly to the hospital to visit his son. The father visited his son again this afternoon. "I want you to know he was a fine boy and never had been known to drink or gamble", the father said. "He has worked hard and had a good job. I can't understand what was the matter in Wichita but something surely was wrong. I am broken up over it." The young man's father knew nothing of the shooting until he arrived in Emporia. Ray Foor has not been told that his brother investigated the shooting in Wichita. He believes his brother went to Wichita on business for the Mosier Safe and Lock company for which the brothers worked. Ray Foor's condition was improved today and he probably will recover. He is still weak but is gaining strength daily. The Wichita Beacon last night printed the following story about Foor under a Convington, KY., dateline: How a young man of excellent habits and regular attendant at Sunday school and church in his own community all his life could turn desperado in another state is a question which friends of Raymond H. Foor, age 21, are puzzling over. They never were more shocked in their lives than when they read in a local newspaper last Thursday morning that Foor had shot a policeman at Wichita. Foor held a position of great trust with the Mosier Safe and Lock company of Covington, and by his employers he was considered one of the best lock experts in the country, regardless of his youth. No one ever knew Foor to take a drink at home, and none even suspected that he ever did. He went to dances but usually remained in the background. He was self-conscious. He was locked upon as a fine young man with a future. And so it is not to be wondered at that Covington was shocked by the tragedy of which Foor was the central figure in Kansas early Thanksgiving morning. [Emporia Gazette, Dec. 5, 1923, p 1]

"The community was saddened Thursday of last week when the death of Mrs.
Joseph SAMPSEL, north of town, was learned, but rejoiced too, that she could
be relieved of her suffering, as she had been afflicted with cancer the past
six months.
Miss Minerva HART and Joseph SAMPSEL were married over fifty years ago. She
was born in Fairfield county, O., Dec. 18, 1843. Three daughters and one son
are living, who are: J. C. SAMPSEL and Mrs. Ella McCARTER of Kokomo, Mrs.
Rosa TRACY and Mrs. Minerva BOWERS of this place. There are three
grandchildren.
The funeral service was held in the Christian church here Saturday afternoon,
where Rev. THORNTON preached a wonderful sermond, and well could he do so,
for Mrs. Sampsel was certainly a splendid subject, as her many friends can
testify to her faithful Christian life. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F.
cemetery where the Rebekah Odd Fellows performed their rites as Mrs. Sampsel
was a faithful member of the order." [Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, Indiana,
