[170] I think the "William" mentioned in the Pickaway Co., Ohio history is Samuel W., as there's no mention of any Samuel in the text, and it appears Samuel's middle initial was W.

DOD/POD: Illinois State Archives, cert 3100049. Listed as Samuel William Foor.

NOTE: Samuel's brother Christian is always about 2 years younger than him in census records, yet both show the same year of birth, 1860, in obits, cemetery records, and/or 1900 census. Christian appears more likely the one to be born in 1860, and Samuel probably 1859 or 1858.

1911 - Fire at Foor's Residence Makes Big Blaze and Draws People From All Parts of the City. It is believed that an electric wire loosened by Wednesday night's storm started the fire which destroyed the barn at the rear of Samuel Foor's home, 609 West Washington street, at 10:45 Thursday night. At any rate it was some for for a while, the sputtering wires, together with the flames, making a glare which lighted up the entire southwestern part of the city and drew people from all parts of town and even from Champaign. The hose and chemical wagons of the fire department were sent out with E. T. Pettys substituting for Driver John Hays, who is taking his annual vacation. Driver Hays saw the fire from his home, and although off duty, rushed to headquarters and manned the hook and ladder truck, thinking that it would be needed. Mr. ------------- his live stock ------- lost all his feed. [There is an ink stamp pressed across these lines and you can no longer read it] [Urbana Daily Courier, Friday, September 08, 1911, Page: 1 ]

NOTE: In 1920 "Marjorie" is 7 and listed as a daughter. In 1930 she's listed as a granddaughter, and there's an additional granddaughter, Wanda. In 1920 it could appear that perhaps this is Harley's child, even though he's listed as single. In 1930 he's still listed as single, and yet another granddaughter pops into the picture with no known parents. Are these children Harley's children? Do they have the same parents? Or is Wanda the child of unmarried daughter Opal?

1929 - Spark Caused Fire at Foor Residence. The Urbana fire department responded to an alarm from the home of William Foor, 605 West Washington street, at 7:36 o'clock this morning and found a blaze on the roof that had started from a falling spark. The damage is estimated at $75. [Urbana Daily Courier, Urbana, IL., Nov. 21, 1929, p 1]

LOCATION: 1899 - A very enjoyable social gathering occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Foor, of near Abanaka, last Tuesday, February 28, the occasion being complimentary to Mrs. Foor as it was her fifty-ninth anniversary. The day came with clouds and rain but notwithstanding the inclement weather about 80 invited guests assembled at the Foor homestead and brought their presents, congratulations and best wishes. Before a late hour the tables were groaning under the burden of refreshments prepared by the genial hostesses and the guests were invited to partake. John Foor was called upon to officiate as master of ceremonies and in his usual happy manner made an amusing address. E. R. Shaffer responded in a few appropriate words and voiced the sentiment of the entire company in words of congratulation and good cheer. J. M. Dull was next called for, also W. H. Halderman. The people were kindly thanked for the compliment paid to Mrs. Foor by her husband, at the close of which J. Foor suggested they all join in prayer l ed by J. W. Shell. Mr. and Mrs. Foor have been blessed with 13 children, of whom all were present but one, Ella, her health not permitting her being present. Messrs. Henry and Frank F. and Mrs. Emma Murphy reside in Grover Hill, Augustus at Lima, John at Mercer, Burt at Ohio City, William near Dull, the rest of the family being at home. When the hour for departure came all thanked their entertainers for the pleasant evening. Mrs. Foor was the recipient of many nice presents, among them two handsome rockers presented by the children. All bade Mrs. Foor farewell wishing her many more such enjoyable birthdays. [Van Wert Times-Bulletin, Van Wert, Ohio, March 3, 1899]

NATHANIEL D. TOWER,* a prominent farmer and stock raiser of Montana township, Labette county, Kansas, takes an intelligent interest in the leading questions of the day, and has deeply at heart the welfare of his section of the Sunflower State. Mr. Tower was born in Chenango county, New York, in 1839, and is a son of Loammi and Elizabeth (Townsend) Tower. In 1865, he left Illinois, traveled overland to Kansas, in company with Samuel Dunham, and located in Labette county. The following year (1866), he took up a claim in section 30, Montana township, having made proper, entry of it at Humboldt, Kansas, where the nearest land office was located. After a few years of happy life, her husband died, after which she was again married in 1847 to Henry B. Alspach, to which union was born eight children, six of whom survive to mourn her loss, viz: Mrs. A. H. Yatman and Mrs. George E. Shaub of Creston, Ia.; Mrs. John O. Robinson of Newark; Mr. M. L. Alspach, of Delaware; Mr. H. C. Alspach of Newark, and Mr. E. C. Alspach of Appelton, O., with whom she lived at the time of her death. An infant son and one daughter, Mrs. Thomas P. Myers, are dead. Besdies her own family she helped to raise a family of six step-children, four of whom are yet living. Mrs. Caroline Iles of Mt. Pleasant, IA; Mrs. Hannah Jaques of Danville, IA; Mrs. Rebecca Hisey of Johnstown, Ohio, and Mr. Richard Alspach, of Chicago. Mr. William Alspach, of Danville, Ia., and Caleb Alspach are gone before. At an early age she united with the German Reformed church of Carroll, Ohio, which membership she retained till her death. About 50 years ago she, with her husband, removed from Fairfield county and took up their residence in Licking county, near Appleton, where she spent the remainder of her life. Her husband died July 23, 1875, nearly twenty-five years ago, leaving her the car of a large family. She was a devoted wife, a kind and loving mother, always striving for the best interests of her children. Her health had been failing rapidly for about three years, due chiefly to the gradual decay of time. Her funeral was held July 20, 1900 at Liberty Chapel and interment took place in the cemetery thereby, the Rev. Blair officiating. [Newark Daily Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Aug. 3, 1900]

[A History of northwest Ohio: a narrative account of its historical progress and development from the first European exploration of the Maumee and Sandusky valleys and the adjacent shores of lake Erie, down to the present time, By Nevin Otto Winter, Published by The Lewis Publishing Company, 1917].

"Benjamin J. Zwayer: One of the most conspicuous places of business in the Village of Malinta is the Zwayer Block. Mr. Benjamin J. Zwayer built that some six or seven years ago. It is a two-story brick building. 60 by 70 feet in dimensions and is occupied by three of the town's leading firms. The Farmers and Merchants Bank has its quarters in the building, the hardware house of W. II. Westrk-k is another tenant, while the third section of the building is occupied by Mr. Benjamin J. Zwayer with his stock of pianos and other musical merchandise.

Mr. Zwayer has been a successful piano dealer at Malinta for a number of vears. He handles the standard Baldwin pianos and has the selling agency for these splendid makes over several adjacent counties. Mr. Zwayer has made a specialty and has given thorough study to this line of business, and with sixteen years of experience is one of the most competent men in that field in Northwest Ohio. When Mr. Zwayer first came to Malinta eighteen years ago he was in the soda and confectionery business for a time until he turned to the more congenial work which he now follows.

Benjamin J. Zwayer was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, August 14, 1860. He grew to manhood there, attended the public schools, and was fitted by early training for the vocation of agriculture. He has lived in the vicinity of Malinta alxnit thirty years.

His paternal grandparents were Joseph and Mary Zwayer, both natives of Pennsylvania. They came to Ohio and settled in Pickaway County during the early '50s, and as farmers they cleared up and developed a good home, and there Joseph Zwayer died at the age of seventy-four, while his wife Mary passed away at the age of eighty-four. They were Reformed Church people.

The parents of the Malinta merchant were Benjamin and Loretta (Glick) Zwayer, also natives of Pennsylvania. Benjamin Zwayer, Sr.. grew up on his father's farm in Ohio, and lived with his parents until they died. When the old homestead was sold he brought his family to Monroe Township of Henry County and lived 011 a farm there until his death. He passed away ten years ago at the age of seventy-four. Mrs. Benjamin Zwayer died in the spring of 1916 at the age of seventy-eight. He was a democrat in politics.

Benjamin J. Zwayer is the fourth in a family of eight children. There were three sons and five daughters; all of them grew to maturity, all married but two and all are now living except three daughters.

In Malinta Mr. Zwayer married Miss Mary Sprow, who represents one of the stanch old families of Henry County, and before her marriage she had received careful training in the public schools, and for nine years had been a successful teacher. She was born near the village of Malinta, September 8, 1868, and has spent .practically all her life in this locality, which is endeared to her by many family and personal associations. Her parents were Fred and Mary (Gunter) Sprow. Her father was born in Pennsylvania of German parents, and her mother was a native of New England and of Yankee ancestry. The maternal grandfather, Mr. Gunter, came west to Ohio, and when in the prime of life was drowned in the Auglaize River in Putnam County. His widow, whose maiden name was Lydia Hoi- den Jones, married Michael Hill, and they located in Monroe Township of Henry County. Michael Hill died at the age of eighty-two and his wife at seventy-eight. He was a Christian minister, and while he lived on a farm he gave most of his time to his church work. Mrs, Zwayer's parents, after their marriage, started out as farmers in Monroe Township and spent their lives there. Her father died in 1891 at the age of fifty-seven and her mother in the following year at the age of fifty-four. Both were active in the Christian Church, and her father was a democrat.

Mr. and Mrs. Zwayer have three children, and have taken great pains- in their home training and education. The oldest, M. Flo, born February 11, 1891, was educated in the public schools and is now successfully engaged as a teacher of music. Maud, born March 3, 1893, also had a public school training and a course in the Detroit Business College, and is now employed as a stenographer with a large manufacturing concern in Detroit. Charles D., born August 26, 1898, is a member of the high school class of 1918 at Malinta. Mr. and Mrs. Zwayer are members of the United Brethren Church, and he is one of the charter members of Malinta Lodge No. 399, Knights of Pythias.
