"Henry Bradley, son of John and Joanna Bradley, was born about 10 December 1841 in Pickaway Co., Ohio. He married Mary Glick 27 Feb. 1834 in Fairfield County. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend George Weiss. Mary Glick was the daughter of Philip and Lydia (____) Glick of Amanda township.

"Mary Glick was a daughter of Philip and Lydia (___) Glick of Amanda Twp.,
Fairfield County. The Glicks, who were Penssylvania Germans, were very
numerous in Fairfield and pickaway Counties. The lutheran Church they
attended about two and one-half miles south of Lithopolis was even known as
the Glick Church. Henry and Mary went to live in Walnut Township, Pickaway
County. They had five children, Andrew, James M. (called Monroe), John,
Philip and Gideon Bradley. The last named child was a nine-day old infant
who died on October 4, 1842. He was buried in the graveyard of the Glick
Church. Not too long after the death of the infant Gideon, Henry Bradley and
his family migrated to Miami County, Indiana, Butler Township. But Mary did
not long survive in this new setting. She died in 1844 and was buried in the
Clayton Cemetery. Her tombstone which I saw about 1930, was inscribed 'Mary
Bradley wife of H. Bradley died 1844 aged 25 yrs.' According to this, Mary
(Glick) Bradley was born about 1819." "The Descendants of John Bradley (1783-1860) and Joanna (Fitzgerald) Bradley (1786-1864)", Dr. Chester Bradley, Hampton, VA, 1975, pp 193-194.

After the death of his first wife, "Henry Bradley took his four little sons and returned to Ohio. About 1846 he married Hannah Schleich of Pickaway County born about 1828. In 1850 they are in Madison township of that county. Andrew and Philip are with them, but John is living with his maternal grandfather, Philip Glick, in Fairfield County, Amanda township. The whereabouts of James M. (Monroe) is not apparent.... "The foregoing information obtained from the census records corroborates what Jennis Swisher told me in 1931. She said that Henry Bradley was a carpenter, farmer and assessor. 'He owned a good-sized farm bordering on the Marcy corner.'. Marcy is a tiny settlement at the intersection of the Marcy Road (Fairfield County Highway 41) and State Highway 674. This latter highway forms the boundary line between Pickaway and Fairfield counties. Jennie said that Henry Bradley built the Lutheran Church on the northwest corner of this intersection in 1856. She said he sold his farm in the late 1860's and moved into Lithopolis, where he attended the Lutheran Church. Henry Bradley died at Lithopolis on 12 January 1873 at the age of 58 years 1 month and 2 days. Birthplace, Pickaway County. Occupation, carpenter. Cause of death, lung fever. His second wife, Hannah (Schleich) Bradley died at Lithopolis on 5 January 1879 at the age of 50 years and 7 days. Birthplace, Pickaway county. Cause of death, Erysipelas. From the Fairfield county death records". "The Descendants of John Bradley (1783-1860) and Joanna (Fitzgerald) Bradley (1786-1864)", Dr. Chester Bradley, Hampton, VA, 1975, p 193.

NOTE: Hanna C. Bradley and husband Henry were supposedly buried in the 2nd
addition, part 2, lot 124, graves 4 and 4a in Lithopolis cemetery. Apparently
no stone is erected or no longer exists. Info came from the cemetery
records. "Cemeteries of Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH", Fairfield County Gen.
Soc., Chapter OGS, 1996, p 171.

"Lucinda Marie Converse, born in Randolph, VT., 16 Oct 1804; married, first, in Granville, Ohio, 4 Dec 1837, Rev. John A. Peters, Baptist minister, who died in Circleville, Ohio, November 1841. She married, second, 4 March 1844, Erwin L. Miner, M.D. They resided in Lithopolis, Fairfield County, Ohio. Dr. Miner died 08 Apr 1869, having lived forty-seven years in one house in Lithopolis. The following account of the Silver Wedding of Dr. and Mrs. Miner, appeared in the Ohio Statesman: 'While the imposing ceremonies of the recent Presidential inauguration were being performed at Washington, our usually quiet town of Lithopolis was participating in a festive occasion, more interesting to us than even the events which were transpiring at the same time at our Capital. The fourth of March, 1869, was the twenty fifth anniversary of the marriage of Dr. and Mrs. E. L. Miner, and in honor of their silver wedding day, friends from the cities, and the towns and the country around, and even from remote ports of the Union, gathered to offer their congratulations, and the more substantial tokens of regard. (much more to description of event). Original data: Converse, Charles Allen,. Heman Allen of Milton and Burlington, Vermont, Captain Jonathan Kirby of Killingly, Conn.. Boston, Mass.: Eben Putnam, 1905, p 456.

"Children of John A. and Lucinda Maria (Converse) Peters: George Converse Peters born 13 Nov 1838, died 10 Aug 1880, Cynthia Ann Peters born 07 Feb 1841, died 20 Jan 1842." Lucinda M. Converse b VT 1804. At 18, she went to Granville, Ohio, where sh was an asst. teacher at the female seminary. Several years later, she married Rev. Jonathan Peters, who lived a short time only. She then taught in Circleville and Lancaster. In 1862 she married Dr. E. L. Miner who died in 1869. Lucinda died in Lithopolis 11 Sep 1887 at 83y. "Genealogical Abstracts from The Lancaster (Ohio) Gazette, V3, 1885-1890", Fairfield County Gen., Society, July 1998, p 34. I believe the 1862 of marriage is an obvious error.

HIS SISTER WAS MURDERED - Fort Wayne Man Hears Bad News. Her Body Found in a Well and Her Husband Arrested on Suspicion of Having Murdered Her -- Brother is a Local Workman. Mr. Louis Frey of Marion Street was summoned to Zanesville, O., last night, by a telegram informing him that his sister had been murdered. He will leave early this morning. The alleged murder was committed at Lithopolis, a small village near Columbus, and the news of the crime received here was in the following telegram to the Journal-Gazette: Columbus, O., Dec. 18 - Charles F. Wheeler was arrested today at Lithopolis, near Lancaster, on the finding of the dead body of his wife in a well on the Wheeler farm. The arrest was made by T. E. Foster, formerly a detective here and Joe Walker, and ex-constable of this county. The woman was not seen by any of the neighbors after Friday. Her body was found yesterday in the well, clothed in her night-dress, and there were no marks of violence. Some years ago Wheeler owned a small pump factory in Columbus. In 1900 his first wife, Alice, secured a divorce from him and is now living in Cleveland. In March 1901, Wheeler married Mrs. Ella Fraye, a widow thirty-five years old, and moved to a farm near Lithopolis, and on a recent visit to E. Locknit in this city, Mr. Wheeler followed his wife and upbraided her, whereupon Mr. Locknit gave him a sound thrashing. Wheeler, on being arrested, was taken to Lithopolis, and probably will be taken to Lancaster. Mr. Frey is a cigarmaker employed in the Hazzard factory on East Main Street. [Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dec. 19, 1902]

"MOB VIOLENCE FEARED - WIFE MURDERED AND THE MOB CLAMORS FOR HUSBAND - Columbus Manufacturer Who Sued His Own Wife Now Accused of Killing the Woman. Lancaster, O. - Mrs. Charles Wheeler was murdered at Lithopolis last night. Her body was discovered this morning and her husband placed under arrest. A heavy guard surrounds the lock-up at that place, where great excitement prevails and lynching is treatened. Deputy Sheriff Callahan and Coroner Cly left here fore the scene. Wheeler is a well known Columbus pump manufacturer and recently sued his wife for an alleged dept of $700 which is the supposed reason for the crime. The prisoner will be brought here and placed in jail. [Fort Wayne News, Fort Wayne, IN, Dec. 17, 1902]

AFRAID That She Would Be Killed - People Tell of Woman's Fright. Chas. Wheeler said to have Brandished Knife. The Coroner's Examination Conducted at Lancaster -- Verdict to be Rendered Today - Dead Woman's Relatives. Lancaster, O., Dec. 20 - The inquest into the death of the wife of Charles Wheeler of Lithopolis, was held here Friday. The first witness was S. W. Blackwood, from whom Wheeler bought his farm. He lives in Columbus. He testified that on Dec. [14?], Wheeler again came into his store in Columbus and said: "I've got them." and showed the witness two certificates of deposit for $300 each, two of $200 each and two of $1,000, all on banks in Columbus. He also displayed a bank book in Ella Wheeler's name on the Columbus Savings Bank showing a balance of about $200. Wheeler also displayed a bunch of keys and said: "I found the keys and unlocked the trunks and drawer and found these papers and bank book." Witness said he told Wheeler to "take the papers back and put them where he got them". At that time Wheeler made no inquiry about his wife.

He said that three weeks ago, on the farm where Wheeler came to him and said, "My God, Mr. Blackwood, my wife thinks I am going to kill her. I was cutting up a hog this morning that I killed last night and she abused me so that I told her I would cut my throat." Blackwood testified that an hour later she came to him and and told him that "Charlie tried to kill her with a butcher knife that morning." Blackwood related that she said to him that her husband had broken in a door and gone after her with a knife in his hand. She said that she wanted to stay that night in the tenant house in Blackwood's farm, as she was afraid her husband would kill her. Blackwood would not allow it.

Mrs. Glick testified that Mrs. Wheeler said she was going to leave her husband, as she could not get along with him.

Henry May, a neighbor, said that Mrs. Wheeler asked to stay at their house the night following the day of the butchering in the Wheeler home as she was afraid of her husband. He said Mrs. Wheeler was in the habit of going away for a week or 10 days at a time. He had heard Wheeler say that at times when his wife was away he would sit up all night in the kitchen.

Art Heller of Lithopolis said that Wheeler had talked to him in Wilson's saloon on Tuesday night, December 2. Wheeler said hs wife was gone and he did not know where to look for her. He supposed that she was up in that "hell hole" where he found her the last time.

Attorney L. C. Jones of Columbus filed an application for Mrs. Sophia Waters, a sister of the dead woman, to be appointed administratrix. The estate is valued at $2,300, $1,000 of which is in realty. There are other sisters and three brothers of the deceased who will also probably have something to say about the appointment of the administrator. They are Mrs. Mayme Brown of Peoria, IL., Louis Frey of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Gus Frey of Pittsburg; Conrad Frey of Zanesville. The coroner will render a verdict today. [The Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Dec. 20, 1902]

MURDER TRIAL at Lancaster Begun - An Army of Witnesses to be Examined in Wheeler Case. Lancaster, O., April 28 -- the trial of Charles F. Wheeler, formerly of Columbus, under inductment for murdering his wife, Ella Wheeler, on a farm near Lithopolis, Fairfield county, is now under way. A jury is now being secured. The body of Mrs. Wheeler was discovered in a well on the farm, 15 days after her disappearance last November. Her husband was immediately arrested for the crime, and indicted by the grand jury in January. Hon. M. A. Daughtery, George E. Martin of this city, and Attorneys Lawe and Lawe of Canal Winchester appeared for Wheeler, and Prosecuting Attorney Frank Acton is assisted by Attorneys Thomas H. Dolson and W. T. McCleuaghan of this city. The attornesy for the defense are taking advantage of every technicality to delay proceedings and the trial will probably be long drawn out. There is an army of witnesses to be examined. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, April 28, 1903]

1903 - Wheeler Found Guilty. Lancaster, O. May 5. After being out three and one half hours the jury in the Wheeler case returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree. Mercy was asked which means life imprisonment. Wheeler received the verdict without flinching. A new trial will probably be asked. Charles Wheeler was arrest several months ago charged with murdering his wife whose body was found in a well. [Sandusky Evening Star, Sandusky, Ohio, May 5, 1903]

Lillian Kathryn STARRETT

[31019]

4 Dec 1915 - 23 Sep 2010

Family 1 : Frank C. BECKER JR

 __
|
|--Lillian Kathryn STARRETT
|
|__

INDEX

[31019] Lillian Kathryn Starrett Davis, 94, passed away Sept. 23, 2010, after a brief illness. Lillian was born on Dec. 4, 1915, in Wellsville, Ohio, and grew up in the greater Cleveland, Ohio, area. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe Reeves and May Rayl Starrett, both accomplished amateur musicians, by her sisters Dorothy and Marian Miller, by her husband Frank C. Becker, Jr., and infant son Douglas, and later by her second husband, David O. (D.O.) Davis. She shared six wonderful years of extensive travel and family involvement with D.O., gaining a new daughter and son and five grandchildren by that marriage.

Lillian graduated at the top of her classes both at North Olmsted High School and at the University of Michigan where she earned a B.S. degree from the School of Natural Resources after starting in forestry at Ohio State University. She blazed a trail as only the second woman ever to major in forestry at U. Mich. She worked her way through college as a stenographer after a year at Dyke Spencerian Business School in Cleveland, Ohio. During her undergraduate years, she travelled to the west coast and back, spending time in the Colorado Rockies to indulge her interest in geology as part of the six-week summer trip.

Following graduation, Lillian stayed home to start a family, then attended Ohio State University to gain teacher certification and taught at the elementary level in several central Ohio schools for fifteen years, mainly at Carroll, Ohio. She loved teaching, especially fourth grade.

After retiring, Lillian helped found and served on the board of Christian Television of Ohio, WSFJ. As a volunteer, she directed the 24-hour prayer line, hosted a weekly Bible study program, and recruited and coordinated area pastors who provided brief devotional spots. During much of her nearly 20 years with WSFJ, she was a member of Redeemer Church in Columbus. Since 1996, Lillian has been a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Oak Ridge.

Lillian learned golf at an early age, winning trophies as a teenager. She and Frank were outstanding ballroom dancers, enjoying the big band era at Ohio State and U. Mich. She was an avid gardener of vegetables, fruit, and flowers, canning and freezing to supply much of the family's yearlong needs. She became a highly proficient seamstress, and enjoyed designing quilts and baby throws for many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was deeply involved in the family venture of growing Christmas trees. She loved hiking and all outdoor activities, especially bird, tree, and wildflower identification, and instilled these loves in her children and grandchildren. She painted porcelain; she did significant work on gathering family history information; she travelled extensively. She greatly enjoyed reading and music and was actively involved in Bible study wherever she lived, sharing her faith openly with others. In her later years, Lillian lived at times with daughter Nancy in Oak Ridge, in the greater Lynchburg, Va. area with daughter Julie, and for a short time with granddaughter Zoe.

Lillian is survived by her children, Nancy Munro and husband John K. Munro, Jr., of Oak Ridge, Alan Becker and his wife Barbara of Bay Village, Ohio, Julia Collins of Monroe, Va., step-daughter Annette Davis Bandy and her husband Keith of Raleigh, N.C., and step-son David C. Davis and his wife Martha of Delaware, Ohio. Lillian was significantly involved with and took great delight in her grandchildren Benjamin Munro; Ross Becker; Micah and Zebulon Collins and Zoe Collins Moore; Kent, Sarah and Bruce Bandy; Vicki Davis Kinnard and Tod Davis; plus ten great-grandchildren.

The family is deeply appreciative of the staff of Keystone Adult Day Services at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge and of the professional and compassionate healthcare providers of Clinch River Home health (CRHH), Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, and Golden Living Center-Windwood nursing home of Clinton, Tenn. They express special appreciation for the exceptional care and love provided by Ms. Vay Davis of CRHH over the past two years prior to Lillian's entering nursing home care and during her last hospitalization.

The family will receive friends from 10-11am on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Wagnalls Memorial Foundation Banquet Hall, 150 E. Columbus St., Lithopolis, prior to a memorial service in that location at 11am. Interment at Lithopolis Cemetery will immediately follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Keystone Adult Day Service program, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, or to the Becky Ball Music Scholarship Fund at Grace Lutheran Church, 131 W. Gettysburg Ave., both of Oak Ridge, TN. 37830 or to the Col. Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue Network, c/o Danielle Rackstraw, Donations, PO Box 1354, Menifee, CA 92585-1354.

Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of the local arrangements. An online guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com.

1950 - Man Shoots Wife to Death after Argument, Then Ends Own Life.
Groveport, O. Sheriff's deputies said today Albert M. Brobst, 55, shot and
killed his wife, Laura, 52y late yesterday and killed himself with the same
.22-calibre gun. Mrs. June Hartman, daughter of the victims, said the
murder-suicide followed a short argument over Brobsts's going to town. Mrs.
Hartman said she heard her mother scream, "He shot me". "I ran to the kitchen
and saw her lying on the floor. He was standing by her feet reloading the
rifle," Mrs. Hartman added, "I asked him to give me the gun but he said "No,
leave me alone. It's gotta be this way". Mrs. Hartman said Brobst then shot
his wife again and she ran out to find a brother. When she returned she said
another brother had already found their father dead. Mrs. Hartman's
four-month-old son was lying in a baby bed less than 10 feet from the spot
the shooting occurred, deputies said." [Coshocton Tribune, Coshocton, Ohio,
July 1, 1950]

1988 - In loving memory of our dear parents, Albert and Laura Brobst, who
passed away June 30, 1950. Gone but not forgotten. Sadly missed by
children. [Columbus Dispatch, Columbus, Ohio, June 30, 1988]

NAME/DOB/DOD/POBurial: "Cemeteries of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH",
Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 1996, p 172. Years only. (1890-1950).

Laura is always shown as younger than he in the census's. According to
census records, she was born about 1898.
