Elijah Howard's Scrapbook

In 2010 Tim Howard, Sr., descendant of Elijah Howard, acquired what he has called "Elijah Howard's Scrapbook". How it is connected to Elijah Howard is unknown, though there were clippings and some Howard photos within the pages. The journal appears to have been an account book. At the top of each page is the word "Lancaster" (presumably referring to Lancaster, Fairfield Co., Ohio) and the date. The date on the front of the journal is May 31st, 1810. Each entry in the journal shows an account number on the left (if there was one), the name of the person purchasing something, what they purchased, and the amount of the purchase. For instance, the first entry is account #2, Philomon Beecher, 1 1/2 yds bed ticking, $1.00. Other such items in these entries would be things like buttons, silk, thread, muslin, a pair of shoes, coffee, beaver gloves, tobacco, whiskey, salt, knives, needles, gimblets, screws, calico, tin cups, bowls, handkerchief, hemp seed, shot, paper, etc.

The journal's oldest last date appears to be December 1811, so it covers the approximate dates of May 1810 to December 1811.

Where this establishment was located is unknown with the exception it was most likely in Lancaster since it states that at the top of every page. What kind of establishment it was is also uknown. Was it from some kind of trading post? Mercantile?

This, however, can be an invaluable resource for researchers as it provides the opportunity to see surnames that were in the area in this time frame. Names that appear often (listed on several pages) you would "guess" lived nearby, and those that came less frequently or who bought quite a lot while they were there most likely were residing further away
